I think the popularity of sport depends on where you live in the region. In the triangle, for us native to the area, I believe we first have a passion for college basketball. Many who move here cannot believe how much we get into, how much we hate the "other teams" (I am a tarheel fan myself). Second to basketball is hockey. I remember "back in the day" when there were not many ice rinks but then the raleigh icecaps happened and people were hooked. I find it surprising that people didn't see the coverage all over the news when the hurricanes won and there were parades all through raleigh.................

I live near Charlotte, so I missed out on the parades unfortunately.

It was pretty much my point that hockey is popular up north, and naturally Raleigh is well known for its transplants so I would guess the sport is more popular there. No the news didnt cover it besides in the sports part of the newscast at night.

And the Panthers are home to Charlotte, so they will overshadow anything else here.

Default Hockey family also looking at NC

We are also considering a move to NC. My husband is self employed and I am a stay home mom of 6 yr.old twin boys who love to play hockey. We visited Cary during the summer and loved it. It's clean, beautiful and has an ice rink. We ended up ruling it out due to the school issues. Raleigh has a top rated rink, so I read. I am not comfortable raising my boys in a big city so we are also looking for a nice family area with good schools perhaps between Raleigh and Cary, but it must have hockey program . I can't even seem to narrow down an area yet. I wish you the best and will keep watching the replies.

You might want to consider Hillsborough.....

Small, family oriented town, good schools, close to everything (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh)

AND one of the nicest rinks in the area....Triangle Sportsplex.

Youth and adult hockey leagues, Duke and UNC club hockey play their games here and Carolina Hurricanes sometimes practice on this rink. Don't know if your boys like baseball as well, but Hillsborough also has a very good youth baseball program in town.
