Just Relocated to NC
Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here on this forum. I am glad that I found this forum. I have just relocated from NJ to NC only one month ago. I love it here in NC-move was job related. However, there are days when the adjustment is more difficult. Good days and bad. I had lived in NJ for 20 years and it was a shock to come out here in NC. There are so many things I love about NC- the space, the people, the prices on food is much lower. The car tax I didn't expect, but that's ok. What I wish to ask is for those who moved to NC what was the biggest challenge you found? I sometimes find homesickness creeping in. I miss my family and friends. Still, this is a beautiful place to live. Any comments and ideas are much appreciated.

Car Tax?
What is this car tax? How does that work? What about the personal property tax or what ever it is where you have to pay for the things that you own or something like that..any one know what I'm talking about?
Thanks for the all the info!
p.s. While I'm asking questions, anyone know anything about Garner NC? I'll be moving there in January.
Thanks again,
Teri

In NC there is this tax called HUT (I think it means Highway Use Tax), I needed to pay 3% of the purchase price of my car when I had the car registered in NC.
I also read that three months after registration is renewed- you pay a tax the following month. This might be a tax on the car's value. I need to read about it more.

Yes it based on the value of your car. If you buy a car that is way lower than the states value you can contest it.

The personal property tax is a yearly local government tax. Where you live within NC determines your specific tax rate. Common items subjected to this tax are homes, land, tagged & untagged motor vehicles, trailers, boats and boat motors.

Not to thread jack, but I just relocated to the Raleigh-Durham area for work as well. Flew in last night and now in the process of finding an apartment. This place is definitely a change from California, but I guess time will be the deciding factor once I get settled down. I agree with you Li-Sung on the fact that it is hard to deal with missing friends and family but these things are a part of life.
