I find the people there for the most part okay. Although I do find there is a ton of racism, ignorant people. They have absolutely no culture nor do they even know their background, they consider them self white with basically no background. Being Catholic myself, when people ask what church I go to and they hear I’m not Baptist they immediately try to convert you. That drives me nuts!!!! I would not consider the people down here any nicer then the northerners. At least us northerners are real and upfront. These people are just fake and will talk about you until they are blue in the face.
As for education, hopefully that will improve since the words, y’all, fixin, du wha now, are not proper English. Hopefully our children will not learn this from there teachers and if there teacher does speak that way, make sure you correct your child immediately.
Other then that you get more for your money in the value of your home and taxes, but clothing, food, living expenses average to be about the same. Good luck!!!

Uh Oh!!! Prepare to get flamed!
These southerners (you seem to be talking only about the white ones) seem very proud of their culture & backgroud- yes some are white... no crime in that. Their food is a version of the British cooking their ancestors brought here, adapted for the heat & the local ingredients, and enriched by the offerings of the African-American cooking traditions.
When they talk about their history we get our backs up & call them racist & ignorant.
When they express remorse that by our very presence, we water down their culture, we dismiss their concerns.
Baptists in NY will try to convert you too (if you can find one!) b/c their faith requires them to spread the good news. That is part of the culture too, it is not meant to insult those of us who are not Baptist.
And, there sure is racism & bigotry in NY... people live in their own little enclaves, where they can spout off about diversity & tolerance from their homogeneous neighborhoods, schools & workplaces.
Also there are plenty of NYers who are challenged in the use of the English language... two examples are: "yous (plural for you = y'all)" "gunna ( going to = fixin )
So, we have to really try to be sensitive to everyone around us, & listen to them once in a while instead of thinking it is all about us.

I have lived in North Carolina for most of my life, started and completed school here, and have moved around in my own town quite a bit.
There are lots of people who are bitter and down on everyone, but you just don't put yourself around those people!
There are too many wonderful people to let it bother me.
You will find racism and ignorance everywhere, by the way. There are always going to be those people who try to push their thoughts and opinions on you. Just say no thanks, and go about your business, yall!
It's all about who you surround yourself with!

It has been my experience in life that what you put out into the world is generally what you get back from it. You may want to ask yourself what you are really putting out there
As a Catholic myself I can truthfully say in all my years here, NO ONE has ever tried to convert me to the Baptist religion - though if they did I would respect that they were only trying to do what they thought was right and would just politely tell them "no thank you".

As an English graduate of a big Southern state university and former newspaper editor, I will not list ALL the grammatical errors in these two sentences. I will simply point out that in this use the word is the possessive pronoun, spelled "their". Blessings to you.

Ugh, I hate blanket statements.
I'm a white southerner who knows her background, is proud of her southern culture (yes, culture), proud of her accent, and proud of her Southernisms (there are plenty of Yankeeisms as well). I'm not a racist and haven't seen a "ton of racism" around here. There is some, but not a ton. There's also quite a bit of racism up north. Cops shooting blacks, profiling, fights between races, racist slang (heard plenty of it with my own ears).
I'm a Christian (not Baptist) and try to let my life be my witness. When asked, I will answer questions about my beliefs and will invite the asker to church when the conversation leads to it. Most of the people I know do the same thing.
Southerners are real, but most of them have the manners not to be rude and say mean things to a person's face. That's certainly how I prefer things. If a person doesn't want to like me and talks about me behind my back, that's their business. You reap what you sow. It'll come back to bite 'em.
If I don't like someone, I just don't hang out with them and I certainly don't talk about them. I go on my way and let them go on theirs. No point in talking about them. *shrug*
Point being, you can't say that all Southerners or all North Carolinians are that way. (I'm not like that and very, very few people I know are like that.) It's a false statement. Blanket statements and negative generalizations are just ugly and shouldn't be made.
I hope that yoo wheel learn from thi-yes and lee-yev a happ'yer lahf. It cain't be do-in' yo-wur heart no good to let such assumptions bother yoo.
lol Sorry. [jacksparrow_mode]Couldn't resist, mate.[/jacksparrow_mode]
Blessin's to y'all.

Niki, this post made me smile Good job.
As for our yankee "friend" - I wouldn't worry too much about what he wrote, he's most likely a troll and not a real poster anyway.

Sorry all, I have to agree with the Yankee, cause yup Im one too!!!, Although some of the responses do ring true, most of the country predjuce is all over, but for some reason down south it seems to be broader, among anyone who isnt born and raised here. I think that most are just trying to preserve their customs etc. It's just that white people just aren't use to being looked upon as different and encountering predjuce is not what we are use to.

Wilmington is a decent city, I don't go there too often but I've never had a bad impression of it. It most certainly is nothing like Charlotte though, it is a lot smaller and has less crime as such.
