Angry North Carolina needs to tighten security

The big story in Los Angeles today is an illegal immigrant killed a marine and girlfriend, that just got back from Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Brian Mathews, 21, of Columbia and his date, Jennifer Bower, 24, of Montgomery Village were killed Thanksgiving night, shortly after 10:00 p.m. when Bower's Toyota Corolla was hit from behind by Morales-Soriano, 25, of Mexico. He had an alcohol level of .32 and had a Maryland drivers license.

Turns out this illegal immigrant got his drivers license from North Carolina because the laws are so lax. He then was able to get one from Maryland. I like North Carolina but they need to tighten up their driver license laws, no driver licenses for illegals. I feel so bad for Brian.

One more bit of info

"Since 1997, North Carolina has issued 400,000 licenses and I.D. cards to people lacking Social Security numbers, about 260,000 of them Hispanic. The state acknowledges some were not North Carolina residents."

Please know many of us here in NC are trying to change this. Visit the website for our senator Sue Myrick for instance. She and our other Republican members of congress are trying to pass the True ID Act. NC is one of only six states where illegals are flocking to get licenses, often with tragic results. From Sue's website: Currently, North Carolina accepts tax payer id numbers to give out drivers licenses. This allows illegal aliens to obtain NC drivers licenses with nothing more than a slip of paper with numbers on it. This happens despite the federal government urging NC to stop accepting them, and despite the fact that 44 other states have outlawed the practice. Rep. Myrick hopes that this bill will light a fire under the feet of North Carolina’s leadership so that they end this practice.

I believe they have changed it (as of August) wherein they are not accepting the tax ID # anymore on the DL application. Regardless, if this guy was driving with a .32 BAC, he would have been driving, license or no license. Doesn't seem he is overly concerned with traffic laws. This wasn't his only driving infraction.

I just got my license renewed in August and I had to provide my Social Security card and I believe they asked for a piece of proof of residency. Anyway, they seemed far more interested in that than if I could pass the eye test without my glasses. I have been restricted to glasses driving for probably 10 years. And she asked me if I wanted to try the eye test without my glasses so I said yes. Somehow, and don't ask, I passed it without glasses. But when I went to get the license, the examiner there told me to check the license itself to make sure that the information was correct and I had to step outside to get my glasses to read it. Go figure. Of course I am 55 and I have that type of vision where you can read off at a distance but not up close. I just use reading glasses now.

*hmph*

I wish I'd had that factoid to throw in the faces of the DMV people a couple years back when they weren't going to renew my license because my full middle name was not in the system, just my middle initial. And when I went home and dug up a copy of my birth certificate, not a stamped/notarized version, they were going to reject that. It took a conference of four people who huddled to discuss my case before I was finally given a new license. And I stood over the shoulder of the person correcting my name in the NC state records to make sure my d@mned middle name was entered correctly

That is just terrible about that accident killing the Marine and his girlfriend. Such a sad, senseless tragedy.

As far as licensing laws; New Jersey now has a 6 point I.D. system to obtain or renew a license. They have this now because our license requirements used to be so lax that some of the 911 terrorists acquired NJ licenses based on very little I.D. There was just a story on our local Philadelphia news on this very topic last night.

The point system is such that certain documents represent a certain number of points. There must be one primary document (4-points) and the other two points provided by secondary documents.

For example, a 4 point document for a U.S. citizen would be a passport, current NJ digital driver's license, current NJ digital boat license, valid U.S. military photo I.D. card, birth certificate, adoption papers, naturalization papers, etc.

For a non-citizen some of the 4-point documents are a foreign passport with INS or USCIS verification plus valid record of arrival/departure or a certain stamp, Refugee travel document, U.S. re-entry permit, valid I-94 form stamped "refugee," "parolee," "asylee" or "Notice of Action" and other forms.

There are 3-point documents for U.S. citizens such as marriage certificates, divorce decree, U.S. military dependent card, etc.
2-point documents are a U.S. school or college photo I.D. card with transcript, FAA pilot license, US military discharge papers, etc.
A 1-point document would be a Social Security card, bank statement, state professional license, high school/GED/college diploma, property tax statement, etc.

The news report last night said that other states are looking to adopt similar rules as NJ. I think it's a good idea.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 is Division B of United States Public Law 109-13. Signed into law on May 11, 2005.

The Real ID Act establishes what amounts to a national identity card. State drivers' licenses and other such documents will have to meet federal ID standards established by the Department of Homeland Security. I believe the states have until May 11, 2008 to comply.

I had a helluva time getting my license because I don't use my middle name, it was ridiculous! I had to bring all kinds of papers back in to prove I was who I was and then they gave my two oldest kids problems because they didn't like their information. And then they gave this guy a license with just a tax id #?!! Crazy!

I had to bring a certified birth certificate AND SS card AND NY license.
Seems easier to get stuff in this country if you are here illegally than if you toe the line.
I just don't see the logic there.

It gets even wonkier for married women when identifying yourself in certain situations. Here in NC, a woman's MAIDEN name is taken as her middle name on some docs. When we went to vote this past election, I walked up to the table and was asked my full name. I said "first name-middle name given at birth-last name." The poll worker looked at me doubtfully and asked me to repeat it. I did. Poll worker looked at her helper, which gave me a chance to lean over and look at the name list. I was listed as "first name-maiden name-last name." I sputtered "oh, cr@p, THAT nonsense! Yeah, yeah, yeah 'first name-maiden name-last name', I'd forgotten that some listings for women are laid out that way." I was then allowed to vote.
