Question Anyone from TX now in NC???

I am looking for anyone that has moved from Texas to North Carolina. I see a lot of people from NY and FL, but not to many from TX... I am having a hard time assessing these taxes that NC throws at you. It seems that they tax everything from vehicles you have already paid taxes on to your pets (that was a little sarcasm). I have read many things from wonderful people trying to help the ignorant like myself. I have gone to the links they provide and just can't figure out what exactly I am going to look at with taxes. So, anyone from Texas that has moved to North Carolina please help educate an old Redneck like me on what the reality is.... Thank you all in advance, and I still think NC is a beautiful, and wornderful place that I plan on moving to next year...

Not from Texas, but we have some NC natives and longtermers on this site who can probably answer whatever questions you may have about state and local taxation. Fire away.

The two largest tax burdens are income and property. The income tax is a yearly state tax while property is a yearly local tax that varies greatly depending on where within NC you reside.

I understand the State Income Tax, I have read all about on info provided by other people. I don't understand the property tax as much. I have read about it on the NCDOR site, but still don't understand how much is taxed and are these taxes due at the end of the year with your house taxes? Also, what is the difference between the Property tax on your vehicle and the HUT (Highway Use Tax) that they charge you for your vehicle? And if I am moving from Texas where I have already paid tax when I bought my truck, do I really have to pay 3% of the value when I move there? Also, is this a yearly tax or one time thing? These are things that confuse me. We simply have taxes at the end of the year for our property tax and pay small amounts when we renew our license for our vehicles (around $65)...

Out-of-state residents moving to North Carolina will be taxed on vehicle's current value or $150.00, whichever is less, unless it has been owned less than 90 days. If owned less than 90 days before applying for North Carolina Title, tax credit against the highway use tax due will be allowed for the amount of tax paid to the other state upon submission of proof of payment.

You only apply for a NC title once. The 3% HUT tax only applies to current NC residents who buy a motor vehicle in lieu of the state sales tax. Since your truck is titled to you in Texas, your HUT tax is $150 or less, since you were a resident of Texas at the time of purchase.

Local Property Tax - Taxable property in NC for the most part is defined as homes, land, structures, motor vehicles, boats, boat motors, trailers and aircraft. Taxed at the total current value. The county tax office sends you one yearly tax bill for all of that. The tax rate you pay depends on your location within NC. Some areas are high while others are low. Where will you live?

I am looking to live in the Hickory area. I understand there are different taxes depending on the county you live in, but there also may be city taxes as well. I have found the county list, but how do you determine what they city taxes might be as well? I do want to thank you for the help, you have cleared up alot. While the State Income tax is high there, the property tax is about 5 times or more here. I am having to pay $5,500 in taxes for my $150,000 house, and I know it is much less there. Plus we have a 8.25% sales tax vs 6% (I believe) in NC. You have been a ton of help and have calmed me down some. I was getting a little nervous about the tax situation. Thanks a ton....

The 2006-2007 property tax rate for Catawba County is 0.4900 per $100 of value. Depending on where you live within Catawba County, you may or may not be required to pay an additional property tax to the local city or town and/or a fire district.

The state portion of the sales tax was reduced in December 2006 from 4.5% to 4.25%. Another decrease will take place in July 2007 bringing it to 4%. Most counties add an additional 2.5%. So, next July the overall sales tax for most of NC will be 6.5%, but a few areas will be higher.

Default may be moving back

Hi Hickory,

I lived in the Charlotte area for 3 years after college before moving back to TX (I grew up in Dallas). I am looking to move back in a couple of years. The state income tax was a shock to me, but in my opinion Texas is getting really bad with the extremely high property tax and auto insurance rates.

I think NC will be better, especially in a few years.

Default Texan here

Hello Hickory - I live in Mexia, Texas. My husband has a job interview in High Point next week.
I have never lived in NC but have visited the state often ( I was born in TN and have been in Texas for 4 years.)

One thing I can tell you is don't sweat the NC taxes! They will pail to the overall cost of living in Houston.
My water bill here averages $200.00 a month.
My electric bill was $700.00 to $800.00 during the summer months. I have read the rates will only go up. As you know - utilities after the Hurricane doubled and will never go back to where they were.
We pay $3000.00 per year property tax on our home. ( The same house there - taxes will be cut in half if not more )

The only thing I will miss If we move will be the fine people of this state - the fantastic road system ( which is the best in the country ) Tex-Mex and of course - the mild winters.

NC will have its own drawbacks as any area will - but I can tell you it is a beautiful - wholesome place. The beaches are the best - nothing like the Gulf - much nicer.

Good luck
