New Yorker wants to move to North Carolina
I am a born and raised New Yorker. I live in Freeport LI, on the out skirts of New York City. I've owned a home for 20 years there and I work in NYC as a Nurse Administrator. I am also a Nurse Practitioner not doing clinical work at this time. My specialty is Women's health (NP), with National Certification. Though I want to sell my house and relocate I am somewhat reluctant because:
I am looking to be near water. I'd like to be near semi-city surroundings which are near museums, cultural centers, arts and music, Health care jobs and low crime area with middle income ($200,000 -300,000) 2 bedrm Condos or loft apts with amenites. How do I find this in North Carolina? (Charlette, Greensboro, Reliegh, Chapel Hill, Willington or Ashville). Can I find it

another new yorker looking to relocate
my boyfriend and i are an inter-racial, inter-ethnic couple from nyc (he is originally from the latin caribbean). we are considering moving to north carolina for the following reasons: 1 (slightly) warmer weather 2) less expensive real estate 3) less stresful environment (eg., not having to drive around looking for parking for an hour, not having to pay $145 a pop because you having found the right parking, not having to wait on line EVERYWHERE). However, we are also looking for an area that is progressive politically and racially and where are are cultural events (and also where we can find jobs). i am assuming that we would have to look near a university for this.
i am a clinical social worker (psychotherapist; I work in the non-profit sector but would consider opening a private practice) and he is an emt (emergency medical technician) in nursing school. we are both bilingual (english/spanish)
what do you think?
thanks for your help.

My first initial thought would be downtown Raleigh, because you like the loft type living, museums, etc.. but of course there is no ocean. You would most likely not have a problem finding a job here. I have a friend that is a nurse and works in Hanover County Hospital in Wilmington, NC. She loves it but says they are behind in medical technology compared to Raleigh.. her words..(used to live in Raleigh & Atlanta). Wilmington was my first choice of areas when I moved here because of the proximity to water... however.. commuting is tough as the airport doesn't have that many flights out of there.. so that hindered my decision. Chapel Hill might work, not sure about loft style homes to rent. Greensboro, I don't think would fit your expectations. Not sure about Charlotte.. busy place.. been there a few times just don't know enough about it either way. Hope that helps a little.

Charlotte all the way!
Good Luck!
Coming from NY...you would be bored in the other mentioned cities. Much smaller!

If you wish to be near water in a semi big city then either Wilmington NC, Mertly Beach SC, or the Virginia Beach VA area. If you can be away from the coast them The Raliegh area or Asheville.

I have been offered a job in N.Carolina recently. My delimma is should I leave my permanent position with NYS Dept of Health to work with my love, Integrated Medicine. in Raleigh NC. The N.Carolina Board of Nursing is no joke and seems not that welcoming to Nurses coming from out of state. The rstrictions on Nurse Practitioner practice seem more stringent then inNY. Advanced practice salaries are also lower. I am still ambivalent about moving because I am near retiring and would like to hang onto my NYS retirement benefits and create my own practice. Any advise much appreciated and Thank you for responses.

No way I would leave til I had that retirement $$ nailed down. Why not come after retirement - and meanwhile, do your research, take some trips down here, etc.
