Default License Plate/Inspection Questions

Pardon me for the stupid questions This whole process is way more complicated than it should be!

Alright, I JUST got my new proof of insurance for NC today. I plan on going to the DMV tomorrow. But, am I right that you have to wait to get your registration via mail before you can get your vehicle inspected? I ask because I will be out of town all of next week, which puts me into a little pinch. What happens if you do not get it done with-in the 10 days? I will not be driving it because I will be out of town.

Next, do the prices for inspection vary from place to place?

Lastly, I have a hole in my tail light. It still functions and is covered by tape. It is the blinker section with the hole on it. Is this OK for the inspection? I turn it in in like 5 months and have a protection plan, so if I leave it, I will not have to pay for it!

Thanks everyone!!

Vehicle registration and license plate are issued on-the-spot.

Vehicle Inspection

Rear Lights shall conform to the requirements of G.S. 20-129(d).

Taillights shall not be approved if:

(a) All original equipped rear lamps or the equivalent are not in working order.

(b) The lens is cracked, discolored, or of a color other than red.

(c) License plate light must operate properly.

The inspection station labor Fee does vary depending on the specific business you use, such as Jiffy Lube or an auto dealership. The inspection station is a private business, not a state operated entity.

Inspections for pre 96 vehicles are $9.25. For newer vehicles, I believe it is $30 because of emissions test.
