Best Area for Families (Charlotte, Concord: to rent, homes, live)

My family and I are thinking of relocating to North Carolina from Maine. My mother in law lives in Cornelius. We have been looking at homes to rent in the area and Cornelius seems a bit high for what we can reasonably afford. Towns I have noticed that have reasonable rent prices are Concord, Mooresville and Kannapolis. Any information on these towns and how they are to raise a family in would be helpful. Depends on what area of Charlotte you will be working. Charlotte is quite large and very spread out. Mooresville & Concord are both nice...but the commute into Charlotte during rush hour in the morning and leaving in the pm is NOT enjoyable.
