I'm going to be graduating soon with a Masters in Elementary Education and I am thinking about moving to Asheville. I heard it is an artsy town with a lot of open-minded people. When I looked on craig's list to price apartments I was in shock at how much some of the rents were for North Carolina. Can someone give me a better idea of what Asheville is like these days? The starting salary for Elementary teachers is about 32,000 which leads me to believe that the cost of living there must be low. What's up with Asheville?

It is an artsy town with open-minded people. It's a vacation destination and a haven for southerners looking to escape the heat of the summer in the rest of the South. We are surrounded by millions of acres of national forest land, miles of trails and scenic mountains. There's a great music scene for a city this size.

There are many retirees and part-time residents. The demand caused by those people, along with the increase in real estate costs nationwide, has sent housing costs soaring in the last 5-10 years. That's the main reason the cost of living is not low. If you have a $600-700 rent and no car payment, you can probably make it on $32k.
