We are just passing through North Carolina and had to use our RV Park address to get local channels on DirecTV. On my bill is "North Carolina Video Services Tax". What a rip-off to pay this tax when I am not a NC resident. These taxes should be based on your billing address, not service address.
What kind of service am I getting from the government for my 10.44? Is the State government taxing me for have a clear view of the southern sky? $120 a year seems a little high for a tax that the government provides no service.
Yep, and many places tax you for the rain that falls on your property, I pay an annual rain tax to the city of Asheville, they just disguise it as a 'storm water fee'. Gotta understand that NC has never seen a tax, fee, or charge that they didn't embrace.
It's about time the good ol boy network in Raleigh is removed!!
The only thing they know is how to tax and spend. They are out of control. We the people inn this state need to send a message to our state government that enough is enough. With the unemployment rate sky high just where do they expect to continue to get revenue. Instead of increasing taxes the should be concertrating on bringing businesses to North Carolina to provide jobs. THEY NEED TO START THINKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEM IN OFFICE!!!!!!
It is sales tax at .073, the usual. Direct TV seems to be in high dudgeon, so maybe they are still upset about being included. They are just passing the sales tax on to us, though, just like Wal-Mart does when you check out there. See http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/VideoNotice10-06.pdf for a full explanation. They hit video services, liquor and some other items all at the same time in 2007. These are flat, regressive taxes and they affect the lower income folks the most. Even more insidious is the recent virtual doubling of the vehicle and trailer registration fees. Our legislature is definitely in the business of seeking forgiveness instead of permission, as they pass these things with the least public notice allowed by law.
wow....I thought that Upstate NY was the only state that never saw a tax they did not like. Every tax has a brother/sister and ugly cousin that comes with the original tax and it is the inconvenience for which you are charged this related tax for having to tax you to begin with...even though it is through no fault of our own.
North Carolina is the worst state in the union.....I mean 1st......they are 1st in taking any and every thing that can be taken from the people that live here....and it they see passing thru.....you are dead bang game......and they only give the highest taxes to the boys down in [rally NC] da capital.......North Carolina Video Services Tax this tax is just another stab in the nc back.......
State Video Tax Fairness Act (H.R. 3679) sponsored by Congressmen
Conyers, Cannon, Boucher, and Franks. This bill would address the growing issue of
discriminatory state video services tax policy by prohibiting inequitable net taxes that are
dependent on the mode of programming delivery. For example, six states (Florida, Kentucky,
North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Utah) levy video service taxes on satellite television that
are significantly higher than those levied on cable television. Passage of H.R. 3679 would help
ensure that consumers – not the states – pick marketplace winners and losers.
I'm looking at last year's bill, exact same date, this tax was $3.59. Today's bill shows this same tax as $7.05. Have they doubled it in one year??? What will it be next year and beyond, doubling every year?
I think we need to be writing to our representatives in Raleigh and Washington. This is pure gouging! "Just because they can" is not an acceptable answer.
Perhaps DirectV (AT&T) is doing the gouging.
