Default North Carolina Video Services Tax

I have this line item on my directv bill:

North Carolina Video Services Tax 10.44

What kind of service am I getting from the government for my 10.44? Is the State government taxing me for have a clear view of the southern sky? $120 a year seems a little high for a tax that the government provides no service.

Oh well. I can see taxing cable customers. They use poles and other utilities.

Thanks for the info.

Cable companies, and phone companies if they don't erect their own poles, lease space from the power companies on the poles erected and maintained by the power company. There is no reason to tax them based on this.

However, NC is the state that NEVER saw a tax that they didn't like.

DirecTV neither uses poles, nor has any wired infrastructure shared with power or phone companies.

This really is the state taxing you for looking up at the sky.

Utilities put up and maintain poles at their expense. Other utilities 'lease' space on these poles to hang their lines from the pole.

So why are we taxed?

Other than because 'they can'?

Cable and telephone companies are notorious for passing taxes on the cable/telephone company (overhead) on to customers as line items on the customer's bill so that they can continue advertising cable starting at only $49/mo (or whatever).
