I-85 now has problematic construction zones from north of Charlotte at the Concord Mills/ Speedway exit through Concord/Kannapolis and into Rowan County. And there is also construction down in Upstate SC in Spartanburg County and the Greenville Gateway interchange at I-385. So I would agree that the OP made the best choice from his location in the Triangle to go I-95 and I-20 into SC and Georgia. Hopefully the I-85 improvements will eventually lead to less congestion when complete.

Do you know if they're just adding a lane to those sections of the highway or is it more intricate than that?

For the Cabarrus/Rowan section, adding 2 lanes in each direction, plus a good bit more:

And for the South Carolina section, the DOT there is repaving mile marker 77-80 and then widening the highway to six lanes from mile marker 80-98 (just eight miles south of the NC border) through 2021.
