Tennessee will not care about NC inspection stickers but the address the car is register at will still receive a letter and possible fine if it is in North Carolina.

Things to do..
Renew the tags and insurance to Tennessee
Drive to the border to have it done.
call or write the dmv and see what they advise in this situation.

As long as the vehicle was continuously out-of-state for at least the 30 days preceding the date the inspection sticker expired, you have 10 days after your return to NC to get a new inspection sticker without penalty.

The bad news is you have to come back to NC to get it inspected. The good news is you can have it inspected at any official inspection station in NC.
FYI, you can renew your tags via internet at the NCDMV website. The registration & sticker will be sent postal. The website also may provide more info on your situation.

Sorry I don't know the answer...call them and ask.

There must be a waiver system in place for military and students.

When I was in the military in California I remember they mailed a drivers license w/ no photo...I had to present my old drivers license with it... was weird, but the way it was.
So with vehicle inspection to get registration renewed? Must have something in place.

Come back and post what you find.

I would say not to worry about it as long as you are in TN, as they likely won't bother you. Then, plan a time as soon as you come back, to have it done ASAP. Your conscientiousness is admirable, but even if you were stopped the moment you crossed the border, I think you could talk your way out of it if you had specific arrangements in place to get it inspected within a day or two.

Actually they are changing the inspection schedule anyway, to coincide with your license tag, and some people get more than a year until the two get in synch. There will no longer be window stickers anymore; it will be tied to renewing your license tag.
