Ok yeah....weird title but now that I have your attention...here goes.
I am looking for a certain type of place that is not just good for dreaming and vacationing but also for living full time.
Job is not an issue as my husband can work remote.
We are a christian homeschooling family, 2 boys 11 and 8. We love being in the mountains. Every vacation we take it's to the mountains. Magic happens when we are there. My dream come true would be living in secluded/more private log cabin, a view, some land for my boys to play/explore, all while being half hour or less to a larger city that has what I listed below. We have talked a lot about Asheville because we have visited many times, it has a Whole Foods, Trader Joes, children's hospital, and seems a good enough size so we wouldn't be bored, but have concerns with rising crime there. If there is a city nearby within 25 to 30 minutes of Asheville, maybe that would be a good fit. We thought about Boone (have been there too) as well but have read about brutally cold winters and excruciatingly cool winds plus seems like it's more for college students or retirees, not families. We don't mind winter and enjoy snow, so keep that in mind. We have seen Roanoke, VA keep popping up on Google lists quite a bit lately.
What city can you recommend, considering above, with the following:
---beautiful mountain and nature views
---ability to live within 25-30 minutes of the main city that ideally would have natural/organic health grocery, crunchy/healthy ish restaurants, great healthcare
--- good hospitals
---plenty of activities for families/kids to enjoy like festivals, museums, farms to visit, field trip locations, etc.
---safety
---homeschooling groups, many church choices
Our price is probably 425k max for a house.
Anybody know where I'm dreaming of and can point me in the right direction???

Those of us from the Midwest get a huge kick out of the Boone brutal cold themes. Tell me when Boone goes weeks without breaking single digits.

You're pretty much going to have to live on the edge of Asheville exurbia for most of your list. Look between Weaverville and Burnsville.

If not Asheville then check Roanoke VA and Charlottesville VA.

You'll get more specific help in the Western NC Forum which is all about the mountains--this one is for the entire state.

Also check Western VA, Eastern TN, etc.

Love Greenville, but it's not in the mountains.
