I see that in 20 years, nothings changed with the schools in NC. They're terrible. Our kids were in the Goldsboro schools. I had no idea public schools could be that bad. When we lived there, the states rank on SAT scores was near the bottom. We moved out of state just because the school situation was so bad. Fortunately, we moved to Texas. The schools in that district were some of the best in the state. What an improvement!.
We had other very bad experiences in NC. I have no plans to ever return to NC.

To be sure, there are some very good public schools in North Carolina. Most of them are in areas of very high housing costs. But too many middle-class families have augiedogie's experience with NC's public schools. Poorer cities and rural areas of the state have underfunded schools and underpaid teachers. Need I mention that Texas was one of the states offering $15,000 signing bonuses a couple of years ago, to Charlotte science and math teachers with a few years of teaching under their belts. They moved to greener pastures and didn't look back.
North Carolina's image of the "New South" takes a hit every time an article comes out on school quality with how the state is drifting downwards in state education rankings. What's the good of spending millions trying to attract high tech, if the school system in the area in which a new business will locate, is average or mediocre? Nothing kills business deals faster than bad school ratings!
Ain't that the truth! Former Governor Sam Brownback's favorite team was the Kansas Buttwipers!
LOL. That really happened, though. Backpack, pocket folders, Q, R, S, toilet paper and liquid soap. Seriously? I was a classroom volunteer and was at the school every week. The teacher always had a list of necessary or desired supplies on the bulletin board by the door.
When your kid's back-to-school list includes toilet paper, you know you're in the wrong district.
