Is 30 dollars a standard fee everywhere, or is this something that needs to be shopped?

Technically, $30 is the maximum allowable fee for the emissions+safety inspections (including the cost of the sticker) in the 48 NC counties that require both types of inspections. That means that, 'technically', you might encounter inspection stations that charge less than $30, but don't hold your breath until you find one.

Info from the horse's mouth and a full fee breakdown can be found here: NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles: Emissions Fees

$30 is not bad. In Virginia it was $27 for the emissions inspection (still using the old tail pipe method) and $15 for the Safety inspection and that was 3 years ago so who knows what it is now.

I've always paid the same no matter where I went for inspection. I finally started going to the dealership. The inspection is the same price, and I get free sodas and coffee.

Thirty bucks for a 2005 and under $10 for a 1995. I don't think the older one needed emission testing.

It appears so - I am a new state resident, but I've read many threads on this board about $250 fines if you miss your inspection by 4 months, or something like that, when you go to renew your registration. This guy isn't taking any chances.

Be sure to replace your wiper blades as they always love to ding you on this so you will buy their overpriced blades right then and there in order to get your sticker.
