This whole thread has become so off base and topic.
No one is out to hurt anyone, whether it is an emergency vehicle, an ems truck, a police car, a school bus, another car or truck, etc. I don't believe anyone on these threads is that stupid.
If it were at all possible without putting yourself and another vehicle in danger on a busy highway where the speed limit is 65, absolutely, positively, move over. If not, then slow down. Do not write tickets for not moving over when the law states, "move over if possible or slow down". And yes, that is a vague statement because it can be interpreted by people in different ways.
You want to save these people's lives, make pulloff areas that you can drive to when being stopped so that you aren't on the side of a major highway.
Side note - my brother in law is a trucker in NC. He got a ticket for moving his big rig into the left lane of a highway while moving over when a tow truck was in the shoulder. The DOT cop cited him for having 18 wheels in a restricted left lane.

Cops have become revenue makers with guns. Its a pretty good gig actually. I wish there was a way to privatize highway enforcement, ahh the money one could bring in.

There are also signs along the interstates that says "Move over for Emergency Vehicles"
They are getting very strict. If there is ever a police, fire, medic along the emergency lane...state law requires you to change lanes...if you are not able to change lane...you are suppose to slow down real slow and proceed slow.
You might try getting a lawyer...but I am afraid that would be a waste of money. Doubt they will waive anything since it is a new law. "Move over Law"
Sorry to hear about your ticket!

This has been the law since January 2007. Signs are clearly marked.

people i was driving with got pulled over for this even before i moved here in 2006! i remember visiting and they were taking me to app state for my grad interview and we got pulled over for passing a state trooper issuing a ticket. the person driving me just moved to nc failry recently and had no clue about the law. he got out of it because he had a badge himself from when he worked in probation in NY. i never would have known about the law so i am glad i was in the car with him when he got pulled over for it. i respect a law that protects our cops! move over if you can and if you can't, just sloooow down. it's really not that hard to follow.

I thought this was a common practice even before it became a law. I have always moved over (when possible) for anyone pulled off the side of the road, emergency or not. It just seems like common sense. I understand that 'slow down' and 'when possible' are entirely subjective but other than that what would be the objection??

I drove from 485 Indepence to 485 Ft Mill Exit and did not see any signs on the way home from church tonight.
What type of signs am I looking for exactly?
Anyway, any cop who isn't an idiot, when pulling someone over on a high-speed roadway, will pull their vehicle over offset to whoever they're pulling over, then approach the passenger side. This law is obviously meant to protect emergency personnel working the scene of an emergency, but a traffic stop is not an emergency and the cop can't really say he was reasonably endangered by traffic...

Ignorance of this state laws does not fly well in the court.
A traffic stop is an emergency! Prevent the person that was pulled from continuing putting others at risk with whatever law they have broken.
