Default Worst city in NC

I would say that Shelby NC is the most dangerous city in NC. The crime rate is very high. I have lived in Shelby all my life and im 42, when I was a kid you didn't here of muders and rapes and things like that, now that all that happens here. Muders is so high, its Dec and in a city of 20,000 people we have had about 150 muders and the rapes are more. That pisses me off so bad that we can't live safe and not worrie about owr kids and familys. I pray oneday it will change but I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I voted High Point, but I would choose Fayetteville over High Point if it were on the list.

That is really surprising about Shelby. We have driven through there and it seemed like a nice little town. Why do you think the crime is so high? We are from CA and surprised at how high the crime rates seem to be in NC. Anyone have any input on why that is. Our area (in CA) is much more densely populated and yet the crime is lower. On our trips to NC, we have never felt unsafe and all seems pretty peaceful, why the high crime?

I agree that Fayette-nam is probably the worst city per capita with regards to drugs and violence. I know this isn't a "scientific" poll or anything, but who the heck is gonna know where Casar and Earl are unless you live within 25 miles of them. I've lived all of my life in NC and I had to look them up on Mapquest! The poll is certainly biased to the southern piedmont area of the state. I'm just offering some constructive criticism. Try including cities from all over the state, that are similar in size.

Not to mention not knowing how to spell the town names (it's Lenoir and Gastonia)

I think Boone is overrated and suffering from poor planning. When heading up that direction, my thought is "cr*p we have to go through Boone." If I have time, I always take the back roads around. It seems the boom hit before anyone knew what was happening and now The Powers That Be are trying to catch up

Cut and dry definition:
Quote:
viewshed is an area of land, water, and other environmental elements that is visible from a fixed vantage point. The term is used widely in such areas as urban planning, archaeology, and military science. In urban planning, for example, viewsheds tend to be areas of particular scenic or historic value that are deemed worthy of preservation against development or other change. The preservation of viewsheds is a goal in the designation of open space areas, green belts, and community separators.
Basically, it means that one can be traveling along ... say .. the Blue Ridge Parkway, just dreamily enjoying the views of trees, mountain peaks, birdies floating through the sky tra-la-la and *KAPOW!* you come around a corner and see a mountainside full of houses. It kind of gives you a momentary "what the h*ll!" sensation

I can't find the article at the moment; I think it might be posted in another thread; but planners are also worried about developers and transplants wanting to build houses on slopes that have a very sheer face. Some of these people seem to have a "la-la-la I can't HEAR you!" attitude when told "hey, we DO have heavy rains and landslides in this area, particularly in the hurricane season." Just like people who build on areas not more than sandbars along the coast and blubber when a hurricane comes along and washes them away, I'm waiting for the wailing to occur when someone builds a zillion dollar log cabin on a steep hillside which slides away when this happens

I think there is a mandate floating around or actually put in place that says a builder cannot put a house on a slope of "xx" degrees without having a geologic survey done first. Makes sense to me, but some people are squawking about it.

It doesn't surprise me about Shelby. I see it on the news reports pretty often to be such a small town. It's really sad to see. It use to be a really nice town back when I was a teenager in the late 70's/early 80's (grew up nearby in Gastonia, loved living there).

I'm not sure why these particular cities were put on the survey. They seem to be clumped in one area. Where was Fayetteville?

We moved to the Shelby area about 4 years ago... We were really surprised about the violent crime statistics! They are legitimate! Fortunately, almost all the violent crime happens in two areas of town. Stay out of these areas! Outside these areas, it's a nice place. Make sure you pick the right neighborhood! One of my co-workers bought a great house at a super price. His son's bicycle has been stolen 4 times. He's too close to the wrong area and the bleed-over from the drug trade, etc. is the problem. My neighborhood is fine. Look for the Burgular alarm system signs in the yards. Nice developments with lots of signs indicate potential problems with theft.
