Fayetteville?
My husband and I have been looking to move to North Carolina. I myself lived in NYC and the Bronx , then moved to South Florida 6 years ago, where I met my husband. We spent the last year in Michigan but definitely cannot make a life here - the economy's just too bad.
We were looking at Raleigh, and thinking also about Fayetteville. We have three boys ages 7, 5 and 3 mos. Can anyone tell me more about Fayetteville? Thanks in advance for any insights shared.

High crime and dangerous compared to the Triangle. Military presence is large and many corrupt businesses exist there to exploit our brave soldiers.

You will read a lot of negatives here about Fayetteville.....much of it true to some extent. Sure there's high crime, but there is crime everywhere. Where I lived in Fayetteville there was so little crime in our school attendance area that all I ever heard about was a few car break ins to take valuables left inside in plain sight. I went to sleep one night with the garage wide open (big OOPS!), and woke to find everything in there, including the new mower etc.
I wouldn't recommend moving to Fayetteville if you have a choice, we went there because of a job. The job didn't work out and I was not unhappy to leave, but had we stayed it would have been fine with me too.
Much depends on the kind of jobs you would be looking for. With the state of everything right now I would suggest looking for a job in the areas you're interested in and then go from there. That's what landed us in Fayetteville (looking for a job somewhere South of CT where we started), and in the Charlotte area from there (trying to not leave NC or at least the Southeast).
Good luck.

Have you thought about Pinehurst or Southern Pines. This is a great quiet area to raise a family, good housing, low crime.

We love Southern Pines, moved from Rochester NY. This is a small town but always something to do, and growing. If you come to visit, check out the pizza place named "How Ya Doin ?"

Fayetteville is a military town with all that implies. I have lived in both. I currently am in Fville area (9 months now) due to family illness and will probably move once that is resolved. If moving for econmical reasons, I would def try Raleigh over Fville. Look for a job first, look at the local newspapers- Raleigh News and Observer and Fayetteville Observer. I love Raleigh or Triad area compared to Fville.

+1.
Yeah there's crime everywhere but Fville's crime rate is probably the highest in the whole state.
Aside from the bad and discourteous drivers, punks that walk in the middle of the road to dare you to hit them, cops don't respond to anything other than shootings and maybe rapes, and yes most businesses are there to cater to Bragg with overinflated prices and most even harbor shady business practices.

fayetteville is not that bad and there are plenty of jobs, especially with Ft. Bragg due to expand, you can also try Southern pines/pinehurst (easy commute to Bragg) or Rockingham, or Lumberton (which is a growing community)
I moved here (lumberton, and work at Bragg) 3 years ago from New York (Long Island)

I grew up in Fayetteville but have lived in Charlotte for about five years. What areas of Fayetteville are you looking at? I would recommend Haymount, and the Morganton Road area from Haymount to the Westwood shopping center. McPherson Church Road is not a bad area either. There are high crime areas, but if you can afford to rent or buy in a good neighborhood, Huntington Park, Vanstory, Westwood, Woodlands, crime is nearly unheard of. I would advise getting a job before moving down here though, What industry are you in?
Deez Nuttz, have you ever thought someone might be walking in the middle of the road because of the lack of sidewalks and crosswalks in town. Fayetteville is a tough town to be a pedestrian in. Have some courtsey for pedestrains!

So walk off to the side of the road! It's not that difficult! The street is for cars, not pedestrians.
Or if you are going to walk in the middle of the road at least have the decency get over so the cars can get thru.
