Hendersonville is worth looking at. Many retirees find affordable homes including manufactured homes, duplexes or apartments.

I like Mr. Piedmont Triad's suggestions (Marion, Hickory, Morganton, Lenoir).

Another area you may consider are the counties north of Winston-Salem (Stokes, Surry). Mount Airy has become somewhat more touristy as it's really capitalized on the "Mayberry" theme. However, that's a small part of those two counties, and you can live rurally and simply yet be within 30-45 minutes of Winston-Salem, which has a decent variety of shopping and services and Wake Forest's teaching hospital.

You're wise to steer clear of Asheville based on your criteria. It's not a place I would seek for simple living or affordability as real estate has become priced well beyond what the people from the area are able to afford. In my opinion, it's become overrun with yuppies/hipsters and the locals aren't really known for being warm to newcomers (probably because of people who have moved in and made it such an expensive, congested, and just a general rat racy kind of place).

Thank you Jowel. I will expand on my search. I've been to Asheville and although I don't care for it, I thought being close to it in case I need medical or to go shopping would be nice.
I definitely want more simple and away from the rat race and the pricey places.

Most of the hospitals outside the urban areas are affiliated with larger medical centers.

A few examples:

Mission Hospital in Asheville is owned by HCA (a huge for-profit corporation).

Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine is a Mission hospital. Blue Ridge is a very nice little hospital. I had some diagnostic work done there a couple of years ago (mammogram & bone density test) and was very pleased with the facility and people.

Frye Hospital in Hickory (I highly recommend Frye) is affiliated with Duke.

Watauga Medical Center in Boone is affiliated with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (Winston-Salem)

Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge in Morganton is an Atrium hospital.

You can easily search for hospital affiliations for any community you put on your short list.

Two other small towns you might want to consider are Saluda and Tryon. They are about 35-45 minutes south of Asheville via Interstate 26..... and they are only about a 45 minute drive to Greenville SC... another great city.

A few more videos of mountain/foothill towns..... even if you decide against moving to these places, they are nice towns to visit on a weekend.
