Crime in Robeson County is well above the state's average, according to the State Bureau of Investigation in their 2007 crime report. Around 24% of the county's population lives below the poverty line compared to the state's 14%. Although I lived in the county for 8 years, I would not recommend it to others, if employment opportunities are available elsewhere.

Robeson County
I just located to Robeson County from Wake county (Raleigh). My BF's father's health is the reason we are here. I'm familiar with NC as I have lived outside the state and have lived in several areas of NC. I have mixed feelings on Robeson County. I recently found out it is the 3rd poorest county in the US. It seems like you step back in time when in Lumberton. It has to be noted that the main economical structure is farming and a plant work. My BF's father is first generation out of Sharecropping (yes- company store, poverty ridden). And he is in his early 60's. This results in a small portion of the population making money off the majority in poverty. The other optin being shift work at a plant. There are strong racial tones in the area. Combine poverty with lack of decent paying jobs and you are creating crime. On the other hand, housing here is cheap to purchase. You can email me with any other questions that you may have and I will try my best to answer you truthfully.

Yes. Perhaps the worst county in North Carolina.

I have lived in Robeson County since 1989. I moved here as a high school student and I've never been impressed with this county. There aren't a lot of job opportunities here and the school system isn't the greatest. If there are job opportunities elsewhere then that's where I'd be looking. I'm actually moving out of the county asap. I just wish I'd done it sooner!

Robeson County is unique in its racial makeup. Although City-Data gives slightly different figures, I have always thought of it as 1/3 American Indian, 1/3 White, 1/3 Black. I agree with you that sounds like an interesting place to live. We pass through it often on the way to the beach and it has always intrigued me. How did it get to be that way? You may want to look up the Lumbee Indians to see some of the county history. Theory is that some of the Indians have blue eyes and it is thought they may be direct decendents of the Lost Colony. I would not hesitate to move there for one minute if one had work waiting for you. It does not sound like it would be a good place to go to look for a job.

I agree w/ NCN - if I had a job, I would go, but otherwise, don't do it.
I also don't think it is the best place for black folk. Just heard some stories . . .

No
I don't thimk its a good place for any folk there is nothing to do. If you want to do anything (besides hang out at wal-mart) you have to drive at least 30min ( Fayettville).
Gangs are a big problem and schools are not good at all. Anyway I would not recomened Lumberton or Robeson County.

I'm afraid I think of Robeson County as the place where Michael Jordan's father stopped on the side of the road and was tragically murdered. It's probably unfair of me, but I wouldn't even stop on the side of the road there.
There are a lot of wonderful places in NC (I see you are in Xenia -- my husband is from Yellow Springs and loves NC). However, Robeson County would not be my first choice.

J_Lurk, My uncle was murdered at that same intersection a few years before Jordan's, so I don't think it is unfair for you to think that way. I won't even stop for gas in Lumberton!
