Default want to move to hickory- morganton are

My family and I are wanting to move somewhere closer to the mountains. We are looking around the hickory morganton area. We would like to live outside the city so we can have some land but close enough to the amenities. We homeschool an academically gifted child. We will need to rent at first. I do Heating and A/C, are there very many jobs out there. We currently live at the beach of nc and are sick of the heat indexes and the lack of nature. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
