I already requested a copy of my driving record....from my state of residence which is SC.
I also did some math, figuring up what my fine may be plus gas, and a hotel for the night before (since I have to be there at 8:45 & I'm 4 hrs away) and the idea of getting a lawyer is starting to sound better an better. I was pulled in Sampson county...and the court i have to go to is in Clinton...can anyone recomend anyone? I've searched online, but so far, everything seems a little like a scam.
Since living in North carolina most of my life, and having had several roadside conversations with the men in grey (who have a job I would not want), I have learned a few things that may help.

1) copy of driving record.
2) have speedometer calibrated by certified shop. If your actual speed varies, you have room for negotiation.
3)Pay the lawyer. 300 dollars is cheaper than 65% increase in you insurance premiums per year over the next 3-4 years.
4) Have cruise control installed on your vehicle and then use it. If you were in a situation where you felt you needed to run 90 mph, maybe you should have left a little earlier.

You definitely need a lawyer is my opinion. You will be getting many letters in the mail from those who want to represent you.

I got a NC speeding ticket two years ago followed by many letters from attorneys wanting to "represent" me.
I called the attorney, was told it would cost $205 and charges would be reduced to a non points/surcharge offense.
I sent the $205 and about four months later got a letter from the attorney informing me that my case was settled as promised.

It's a "program" developed between the courts and NC attorneys.

I did not have to take a day off work or travel 180 miles round trip to Raleigh.

Like PDD said, hire the lawyer. Cheaper and easier unless you have a terrible record.

That said, as long as you have a decent record, it is pretty easy to talk the DA into reducing it to 9 over (no points) and pay the fine. That costs you time and mileage though.

My husband (SC) just got speeding in NC 59 in 35mph zone. IT was one of those situations where, honestly, we did not know........the road seemed like 55, he was driving like others, and the first sign we saw after he got the ticket was 55.

I feel it was a small town speed trap but such is life. He wants to "ask for a jury trial" which I think will just inflame things. He has to go to court. What could happen? He is a very safe driver and NEVER speeds (believe me when I say that, he drives like a little old lady)

I told him he should go back, look for the sign that said 35 and also take a copy of his SC 10 year driving record.

Wouldn't it be great if OnStar would figure some way to tell you the speed limit when you asked too. We just had our first trip in our new car and loved not having to drive with a map in one hand. Maybe they could figure out how to send a message to your cruise control letting you know about speed limit signs that are behind trucks next to you or that beautiful tree that hides the sign.

I don't know how OnStar works, but so far I love it.

I had similar situation 55 in a 35 and I went to the DA before trial and apologized to him and he reduced to 39 in 35. I had to pay court cost but it reduce where it doesnt effect my insurance.
I also was driving on country road and also though the area I got the ticket in was still rural.

You should be receiving a bunch of mail from lawyers that can give you options if you dont know an attorney.

An attorney can get it reduce to improper equipment. Shop around and go with lowest. My partner this past summer had a speeding ticket in his mustang reduced by an attorney improper muffler.

By and large GPS units already due that but in our recent case on the stretch of road where my husband got the ticket it was off..........typically I see the GPS make the switch within 100 feet or so of the actual speed limit sign...of course they do not DO anyting other than change the speed redout to red on the GPS but you notice it.
