Some of the coastal towns of N.C. have a New England feel...especially around the Outer Banks - even the accents are similar. The maritime-based economies and colonial roots are similar to New England.

Old-fashioned New England town? Which one? When I first came here to scope out the area, I was totally enthralled because I saw so much that reminded me of a warm Maine. Still does and still love it. But that may not be what you were thinking of at all. Little downtown Tobaccoville reminds me of little downtown Pembroke ME, but at least a few of the stores in Tobaccoville are still functioning. Problem is Pembroke is a very tiny town in downeast Maine, almost as far as you can GO downeast, with a very steady population count of around 300.

The center of King (not the mall areas around the highway) reminds me very much of Bridgeton, ME, and the center of Rural Hall does too.

Winston-Salem is not like any city I've been to before, and I love that also. Imagine going to the city and not sitting in heavy traffic to get around. Wow.

Charlotte and Raleigh reminded me more of the cities in MA with the traffic, but I still found some charming Southern hospitality readily available.
