Siler City, Asheboro - general info?
Can anyone tell me about how far a drive to Raleigh, Charlotte and/or W-S these (or similarly located towns) are? Also any general info or opinions, ie it obviously appears very rural - but is it rural in a "nice" kind of way or more a depressed, run down not-so-nice way? Don't care about schools etc, more just the general feel of the area. Long term I'm thinking they might be a good place to get land cheaper and I'd like more than the avg slice of land to build on....thx

Asheboro is ok it is a great area for a young family but older kids will go bonkers if they are not heavily involved in after school sports.
It is in a good central location of the state if I had to choose that town I would focus on the south west side so I could be closer to the Uwharrie Mountains and Badin Lake.
It has been awhile since I have been to Siler City but my impression of it is a sleeper quaint kind of town.
Asheboro is about 1.45 hours from Raleigh and Charlotte and only 30 minutes to Greensboro
Siler City is 2 hours from Charlotte a hour and 15 minutes from Raleigh and 50 minutes from Greensboro.
If you looking for a home at a good price decent taxes and nice yard then either will fit your bill.
I dont feel those areas are ecomically depressed due to their central in the state locations but are sort of stagnant.

Thanks for your replies, Bill I was wondering the same thing. I can tell you my aunt and uncle moved there from Long Island and love it. I'll be moving there in September. I'm 25 and a special education teacher of children with autism. i'm hoping I can find a job down there teaching children with autism, as well as find some friends. I know it's pretty quiet down there, I'm hoping not TOO quiet though. Bill where do you live now? Let me know if you've been to Siler City/Staley/Asheboro and let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Shaun

Ashboro is so pretty. we just went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago and drove through the town--not run down at all.
Pittsboro also very pretty wth a quaint little downtown. there are farms and its just very pastoral in a nice way.

Siler City has its struggles. One large employer, Pilgrim's Pride chicken processing, just closed it's doors and several others (Joanne Fabrics comes to mind) have also left.
On the other hand, the Arts Incubator is there and they have a monthly Friday night art walk, there's a new coffee house, and many of the older established businesses remain cheek to jowel with Walmart.
They also have the very best fried chicken in the entire universe at Brownie-Lu's, a fabulous (not yuppie cute) diner.
Pittsboro is prettier. But you will likely get more bang for your buck in the western parts of Chatham County than the east.
I am also favorably impressed with some of the towns in Alamace County, esp Saxapahaw.

Buncha rednecks, illegal aliens, and Bush Republicans mixed in with some "gangstas"; Wal-Mart sprawl, bad wages, etc....sorry folks.... born AND grew up in NC. Got family from that area. Have spent time there. Of course if you have a lot of money and want to build a dream home in the country and isolate yourself, it might be for you. Good luck!

I used to teach for Asheboro City Schools and now teach in Randolph County Schools. You will have NO problem getting a job in either, especially since you teach special ed! Let me know if you have any questions!
