Red face Relocating to Fayetteville Area

My husband and I are relocating our family to the Fayetteville area due to him being stationed at Pope. I am originally from Fayetteville but haven't been there in 20 years, can anyone help me with where to move, where not move, schools (my son is in 1st grade by then), just overall information. I keep hearing good and bad things about Fayetteville. I was looking at maybe Hope Mills. Any advice or information would be great

Hope Mills is getting terribly crowded, imo. I'd go "east of the river" towards Eastover/Stedman/Beaver Dam area. Stedman Elementary & Beaver Dam Elementary, Eastover, and District 7 are some of the top elementary schools in the county. Housing is a little cheaper out this way too.......Eastover is really booming (they're incorporated now!) and Stedman has a couple of nice little subdivisions popping up!

Your husband is getting stationed at Pope? I just came from there, I thought that base was no longer accepting in bounds? Unless he's one of the 440th reservists coming out of Milwaukee?

We are also moving to Fayetteville this summer.

We have bought a house in the Hunters Ridge neighborhood in northern Cumberland County though still has a Fayetteville address.

It seems to be a very quiet area ( We originally wanted to live in the Stoney Point school district but found Hope MIlls too busy and congested) and I have been told the elementary schools - Long Hill & Raleigh Road are very good. We also have a 1st grade son! Good luck to you!

Default Cumberland County School System

The following is a link to the Cumberland County, NC School System's website: Cumberland County Schools - Fayetteville, North Carolina

There are many great schools and some offer various special studies. You also have the option to register your child in a Choice School (and take them to and from the select school each day).

Once you have selected an area, you can search current available homes meeting your criteria (including rentals) on the Public Fayetteville, NC MLS (Multiple Listing Service). See the Public MLS here: Fayetteville Public Site

Best wishes on your move...and, welcome back!

You can not register at some of the choice schools, but you can apply for registration. Openings are filled by a lottery system so there is no guarantee that you will get a spot at that school. I think it would be better to move to an area with a school that you like.

Actually, children in that district--the ones "assigned" to that school get first choice. Then after that, it's "first come, first served," until they're full.

I just assigned to pope, showing up in Nov. Would be a good idea to buy if we will be moving in 2 years? I have seen Raeford has some nice rental houses, is it nasty like i hear spring lake is?

EDIT: I am a new 2Lt, and this is my first active duty assignment with the CE squadron. Any info on the BRAC timeline would be awesome.

Raeford is nice, but a good 45 minutes to an hour drive if you can deal with it.

Depends on what part of Spring Lake you're talking about. The worst part is the area behind Carlies IGA or the area behind Taco Bell.

I personally lived in Deerfield, which is the next light north of 690 (Vass Rd). That's in Spring Lake. There's a church on the right and a Kangaroo across the street on the left. It's not a bad subdivision, there's a few kids that run around but it's mostly made up of older retired folks. There's some decent rentals in there.

I can't remember the BRAC time line on Pope but I think by around March 2009 it should be turned completely over to the Army and the 440th.

And with the economy in the gutter, I'd not buy if you're not going to be there any longer than 2 years. Chances are you'd end up taking a loss at resale time.
