Town of LOCUST? Anyone know? (Charlotte, Raleigh: low crime, houses, school district)

I have friends who live in Norwood, NC and they recommended that we look at Locust, NC for a small town feel with good schools. Anyone heard of this place? The schools would be in Cabarrus county I think (or maybe Stanly county) depending on the address. Schools would be West Stanly or Mount Pleasant I believe (highschools). Thanks for any tips/advice you could give.

From what I just read about it ...sounds like your friends are right... It is east of Charlotte somewhat. Do a search on all cities in nc and you will find it. Low crime and alot of good people it seems.

I know it's near Reed Gold Mine, which was the site of the first discovery of gold in the US in 1799. If you decide to look around the area check out the mine, it's quite fun and interesting.

Thanks to you both for the info! I checked out locustnc.com but it wasn't overly informative (small town = small website....LOL). I think we'll focus on the West Stanly Highschool school district and go from there. Seems like there are a bunch of small towns in that area (Locust, Oakboro and Stanfield are a few I've searched for houses in). I like that it's right between Charlotte and Albermarle (will frequent Albemarle more often most likely).

I live on the outskirts of Locust, about 7 miles
Locust is really growing. Walmart is looking to build a new store, it is in the planning and approval stages. Locust is in the western end of stanly county, and schools in this area are Kthru 8th, and then 9thru 12.
Locust is rebuilding their K8 school to hold 500 students rather than the 300 it currently holds.
You can live a little further down 24-27 by about 10 miles or so, and live in little areas like oakboro, red cross, ridgecrest area. Ridgecrest is a very good school, has 300 students right now. All schools in this area feed into West Stanly High School.

Locust is awesome ! I've lived here my whole life. You will not find a better small town that is conveniently located to 4 large towns/cities including Charlotte. It's no more than 20-25 min. from any of the 4 towns/cities. The schools are great here ! I attended Locust Elem. and West Stanly and all 3 of my children have. Locust is what I consider a "hidden gem".

I have lived in Locust and currently live in Stanfield. I like the area. I will tell you this. People talk in small towns say things, true or not true. Schools are ok. However, not everyone knows this West Stanly High has the most students with AIDS and HIV. This is very true!!!!!! My brother in law was taking a class at SCC and that was one thing they reviewed. He took his son and daughters out the next day.

I'm not in the area, so I don't know the condition of the schools - but wouldn't it make more sense for your friend to simply teach his kids about abstinence and safe sex? I went to High School in Raleigh and there were pregnant girls, but just like STD's...theres only one way to get that way! lol

Locust, NC is absolutely beautiful!!! its small town, but growing, but growing nicely! I live in Midland, right next to it, so i have to go to locust for EVERYTHING!! (b/c midland has nothing lol) I would move into locust,nc except for my husband is Cabarrus sherriff deputy, so we have to stay in the county ...However, I do hear that Stanly County school are not the best! I have many friends that went there, and they did nothing with their lives, mainly because the school is so redneck ( theres nothing wrong w/ redneck, all im saying is that its exceptable to work at the local mcdonalds/gas station for the rest of you life)!! lol but i dont have children so not a worry of mine for hopefully another 10 years!
