Clayton is 20-30 minutes east of Raleigh, offers great schools, is affordable, yet rural. You'd probably like it.

Saralovesky asked for a place that was further east than what the OP was looking for, which was areas in the Triangle. I would not consider Clayton rural anymore. If anything it's suburban. Saxapahaw is west of the Triangle.

The towns I'd suggest would be Little Washington ( Washington, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

Vanceboro
( Vanceboro, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

Newport
( Newport, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

and

Pikeville
( Pikeville, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

You didn't ask about employment, which is the biggest downside to the small towns in North Carolina. The plants and mills that used to sustain them are gone. What's left are low-pay service sector jobs, mostly. The best employment opportunties are closer to the larger cities, but the cost of living goes up the closer you get to them, if you want to live in a safe neighborhood.

I you're retired, self-employed, on disability, or on government assistance, you'll be fine in a small town here.

If employment is not an issue, I would look at SPARTA, kind of in the mountains, up near Virginia. Not sure how many jobs there are there, however.

I love Sparta. You are right though, there aren't many places to look for jobs, unless you want to work on a Christmas tree farm It's a beautiful place to live though!
