My suggestion is to go to the Charlotte area sub-forum and do some reading. You can also use the search button and limit the search to Charlotte with "small town" as the search term.

Some examples:
ISO: Ideal town for a new family while still being within reasonable commute distance to Charlotte.
Is Charlotte an affordable place to live?
Large Family Needing Space, Scenery, & Country Charm!

A website called Nerwallet recently released a list of the "Ten Best Cities in NC for Young Families" that may interest you:

1. Waxhaw
2. Marvin
3. Holly Springs
4. Stallings
5. Indian Trail
6. Mooresville
7. Apex
8. Stokesdale
9. Morrisville
10. Etowah

1,2,4,5 and 6 are near Charlotte.

Depending on where your job in Charlotte is located there are plenty of places. Post on the Charlotte board.
