We are thinking of moving from Wilmington,NC to Charleston,SC-any input would be appreciated.
We are not rich and the Wilmington job market is in the toilet.

I've lived outside of Charleston - in a very small town called Moncks Corner - and I worked in Charleston. I'd second the opinion of the Charleston area. However, Mt. Pleasant is a fast growing area and the cost of housing is going up. It's too crowded for me. I'd suggest following the direction of the person from Waterboro. It's big enough to be a city and still has a small town feel. I currently live in North Carolina - again just outside of a couple of small towns, not in the city, itself. I work in the Asheville, however. You might want to ask yourself what climate you really want? In Charleston area they have HOT, HOTTER and HOTTEST. Basically Spring turns into Summer turns into Spring. I missed the autumn colors and the cool nights when I could enjoy a fire in the fireplace. I love North Carolina, in the mountains because it doesn't get too hot in the summers (90s at the top! - and not for long) or too cold in the winter (in the 20s and 30s at the coldest. Rarely in the teens and not for long). I enjoy having all the seasons yet in moderation. Education is better in North Carolina, I home-schooled my teens in SC for that reason. Economics are in a better condition in NC, as well.

I agree w/ others who have advised that the Charleston area sounds like a good match. Check out MUSC.

There are many towns that would allow a comfortable commute to Charleston. I find that part of the country to be as close to "magical" as I have discovered on the east coast, and I have wandered up and down for decades checking coastal areas out.

Good luck!

I had heard that Morehead City is full of strip clubs and such because of the commercial port being there. Any truth to this?

You might also want to check out Wilmington, NC. Frankly, there aren't that many choices for cities along the coasts of either of the Carolinas.
The Grand Strand area (Myrtle Beach) might be a third choice but it's the most touristy of the cities along the coast. You'll have to decide if that's a plus or a minus.
Hilton Head is adjacent to Savannah, GA and that might give you another option to stay in the Carolinas but be adjacent to a larger city.
The rest of the Carolinas' coast is mostly smaller towns and tourism communities.
