I've read through many of the threads about registering cars in NC when coming from out of state, but I'm not clear on what order to do things. Is this correct?

1. Get liability insurance on your car in NC
2. Register your car and get new plate (pay all fees and highway use tax; property tax bill will come in mail later)
3. Get vehicle inspection and emissions inspection
4. Get driver's license

So with this scenario, I would be getting the insurance in NC as the first step. At that point the car is still registered in the state where I'm moving from, since I need to have the insurance before getting the car registered in NC. Is this correct?

Get liability insurance on your car in NC
Get driver's license
Register your car and get new plate
Get vehicle inspection and emissions inspection

I know some states use initial of middle name on SS card make sure it says full name.
You will need proof of NC residency . A phone , power, etc bill will do fine.
Make sure the correct name is on the title.
And read the website for any other valid documents

Yep, the law changed last September, I believe. You now have to have your NC Drivers License before registering your vehicle with the DMV.

Also, you may have to switch your insurance company if they are not licensed to sell insurance in North Carolina. Some companies are, some aren't.
