Racism has been all over the country. Do you think places up north never had segregated facilities?

I am not the one who brought it up, pay attention. I was not born in NC, but my father's side, including him, are all from there and most still live there. My mother's side, including her, are from Arkansas. What my family, who are from the South, refer to as the Deep South are small rural towns isolated from metropolitan areas. Many places in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, etc.
BTW, I even speak with a Southern accent, though it is barely noticeable anymore except for certain words.

Wow! Did any of you know that? I sure did not!
MA is considered so liberal and enlightened, and I never have heard much about the slavery issue there vis a vis their current racial climate.

Sigh... this is why I hate talk radio's idea of coherent, logical arguments. Massachusetts is one of the oldest settled parts of North America. They burned witches there once, too, and they weren't exactly "liberal" under the Puritans! :-) Can't draw a big comparison between today's Mass. and that of 350+ years ago...
BTW, as a native Southerner (whose family has been exclusively south of the Mason-Dixon since the 1760's)... I would agree with RaleighRob's comments about asking about religion. Never in a million years would the Methodists or Baptists in my family asked about church affiliation as a way of getting to know someone.

The host was a southerner, his point was that you cannot denigrate the people of south of today because of the actions of the people of the south a century ago, and that one would not think to do that to the people of the north.
I think it was logical.

There is a Budhist retreat in Brunswick County. The monks are from Thailand. They say they came to this area because the energy is good. The monk put a pendulum over a map of the USA several times and it always ended up here and so this is where they came.

YES racism IS in the deep south...been to Alabama lately or not? My friend has and many black folk STILL have to answer by the name of 'boy' with their head lowered.
My trip however, to Hickory area was fruitful indeed, maybe it is from many northerns moving to NC, but I didn't encounter any reason to feel that I was in a backwards area at all and I so look forward to moving there.
And I'm very happy to know of all the Buddhist temple areas in NC, and spiritual places my family can go to and be with like-minded people.

Just an FYI, as strange as it might sound to some...with the age of Aquarius now on us (which opens up minds and strong intuition, the past 2000 years was the age of Pisces-fish) a lot of Earth-spiritual type people are flocking like crazy to Ashville and western NC...some say they are drawn unconsciencely to the massive amounts of crystal in the mountains.
Anyway, I think people are really starting to respect another's faiths no matter what it is, we have no choice anymore. I think it's cool if people go to church, temple, in their backyard, in nature (that's where you'll find me) or where ever! As long as you are a good person, and give more than you take in this world...a belief means nothing if you are not good.

Be careful what you wish for. Just wait until NC turns into a new home for the cultists, like Heavens Gate, Branch Davidians, Core Council, People's Temple and such.

There is a large middle ground in there, that there is plenty of room for, from main stream Christian groups common in the area, and other, just as ethical, religious belief systems that are growing in numbers.
Alternative religious belief does not mean the same, in the least, as destructive cult.
And, groups like the People's Temple, Branch Davidians and Core Council are Christian groups who could easily operate within North Carolina anyway no matter the welcoming environment for other belief systems.

This is a board designed for helping people decide where to live, but some of the comments here bash Christians and have nothing whatsoever to do with helping anyone.
Accusations are being made strongly implying that Christians in general are intolerant.
I have to ask who is really intolerant here? Who has a snobbish or pushy attitude?
I don't think this thread is helping anyone in terms of what this board is really about.
