Yep, state laws and regulations change. What was true a year ago doesn't necessary hold true today. Most of the previous posts in this thread were written well over a year ago.

Yes, North Carolina is in the process of complying with the requirements of the Real ID Act of 2005.

You must now have a valid NC license or NC ID card to register a vehicle in your name. As of 01/01/ 2008 you must also fill out an "eligible risk" statement.
This statement affirms that you have current vehicle liability insurance, you are going to keep the car domociled in NC, and you are legally able to purchase a vehicle in your name in NC.

Same Situation
I stumbled upon this forum while searching for some answers on a similar problem, and noticed there seems to be some very knowledgeable posters here.
I purchased a vehicle in Florida and now I'll have to register it in NC. The dealer however will not release the title and what not until I can show the tax had been paid on it, which I believe is that 3% of the value tax in addition to the HUT?
Where do I pay this this tax at? The treasurer's office?
Do they require any paper work from the dealership?
Any help is appreciated.

There's no sales tax on motor vehicles in NC, only the HUT (vehicle registration tax).

We just went through this process. Yes,you do have to get your driver's license first then go to the other location to get your tags, title, and registration. We made the mistake of going to get our title first and being sent to the driver's license bureau. Tell me please, why doesn't NC DMV handle both transactions in the same location? We had to drive all over Kernersville to find both of these and waited too long at each facility. Makes no sense to me!!! Virginia has it all under one roof and is quite efficient. NC could learn a thing or two from Virginia's DMV!

Don't feel bad about being confused . I have lived here 50 years and I still don't
get it. We pay sales tax to buy a car, property tax for the car, registration fees,
tag fees and I am sure other fees.

To those of you that have recently relocated here...I'm trying to compile a list of websites that explain our taxes (including vehichle tax) and other things you wish you had known. Please help me out. What didn't you know but wish someone had told you. Thanks in advance!
