You've lived here all those years and don't know about this?

Yes, Mayberry is based on Mt. Airy. It is the birthplace/former residence of Andy Griffith (he now lives in Manteo). Floyd's Barbership still exists as well as Snappy's Lunch and Wally's Service Station. The "Mayberry" heritage is something the town celebrates each year with Mayberry Days (scheduled this year for September 21-24). Sheriff Taylor's mention of Mt. Pilot (IIRC, it was where Mayberry folks went for Chinese food) is actually Pilot Mountain, south of Mt. Airy.

Something else that area is known for (not widely. maybe it's something more notorious than memorable) is that Chang and Eng Bunker, the celebrated Siamese twins of the 19th century, settled in the area after they retired from the sideshow circuit

they married sisters and had a passel of kids between them. Today, there is a double bridge named for them. It crosses 601 south of town.

For me it has nothing to do with "outsiders". I would feel the same way with locals. I don't happen to live in the perfect (small) town but have watched with sadness the perfect town in my home state become so overcrowded and expensive no one but millionaires can afford the properties anymore. I'm talking about lots--LOTS! costing around $750,000 (and this is in the south where property that expensive is unusual). The town is referred to as "The Carmel of the South" and the description fits. It's beautiful, an artist colony, restuarants to die for and right on the bay. My family still lives there and when the town was named "The best place to retire" several years ago it all went down hill from there. It took only about 3 years to be completely transformed. We still visit often and are always amazed with the traffic, new faces and tourism that has become the norm. Promotion is not always a good thing. I feel empathy for all the residents in all the towns and cities that have that "honor" bestowed on them. The clock starts ticking from that moment on - on just how long it will take for what was once a pleasant place to live become Grand Central Station.

So please don't take it personally or because you are an outsider. I wouldn't do that to any town especially a small one. Jewels are more fun when they are discovered with our own eyes. Then we all can enjoy what we find and hope that we are the only ones that know, don't ya think?

Thumbs up must see Mayberry

I was in NC a few months ago and I thought the Mayberry setup was awesome. I think anyone traveling in the area should take the time to stop. It was the best part of my trip(almost).

i agree to a certain degree. If we had ALL the people that want to find that one special town (with good schools, friendly neighbors, and a great economy) live near eachother, it would be one heck of a community. People that want the best for their families are good folks....think about it

Your answer is exactly what we're hoping. "Outsiders", please call somewhere else - far from here - home.

Lightbulb Sorry

I didn't know that my post would cause such animosity. I can sympathize with locals not wanting there home town to change do to a great influx of people. However, people on these forums are people looking for a change, for a better life somewhere else. I don't see the problem with asking for help from somebody. Not everyone was blessed to be raised in a nice, warm, loving community that has great weather and even though I wasn't raised in the greatest place, doesn't mean that I don't want to provide a better, safer, community for my kids.
