Good Pizza starts with a good sauce and clean water. Just because a state isn't known for it's pizza doesn't mean you can;t find a good eat. It's the joint that makes the sauce, and it's up to them to create a fresh, good tasting sauce.
The best tasting pizza will be the one I deliver. Maybe it's the pizza, maybe it's just my charming personality.
After reading the wikipedia information about the history of pizza, I now realize that in North Carolina the nearest thing to historical pizza is a tomato biscuit. Now that is good and good for you.
I just moved here a year ago and couldn't help but notice how the native folks just love Coleslaw on everything. I wouldn't be surprised if...oh God forbid!

You mean like on our hot dogs and hamburgers??? Have you tried it yet? You JUST might like it.
Then again, I lived in Belgium and the Netherlands for two years and learned to like mayo on my fries instead of ketchup while there. It's a case of learning to be a Roman while in Rome. Liz
Having lived in and near The Pizza Capitol" of the world, New Haven Connecticut: Pepe's, Sally's, Modern Apizza, The Spot and numerous others and having just purchased property in North Carolina (Moving there soon) I am not expecting to ever have Apizza like I have had. It just won't happen ! Sooooo..... Tell Ya what I'm gonna do..When I get settled in North Carolina ,start meeting folks, after I break bread on some barbeque and other local deliicacies I'm gonna invite people over, make Apizza, clams with white sauce preferably, whip up some macaroni with homemade sauce of course (Abundanz on the Garlic). Sprinkle in some fine oregano ( You can't buy the Oregano I get) and were are gonna eat. Best way to make friends and influence people.

YES! I am totally with you on this. I have learned that slaw on burgers and hot dogs rocks my world. I also now love mayo on my fries after some European immersion!!
Yet, when I go to Chicago, I indulge in a Chicago dog and never whine about "why can't I find slaw on my dog?"
When we were visiting Boston and looking for a good pizza place, my husband approached a group of old women dressed in black, speaking Italian and congregating on a street corner. He asked where the best pie is and they told him - we went and had ambrosial 'za. So, look for some old Italian ladies in black chatting in a group. They'll help you out.
I grew up in B'klyn... I know those old ladies you mentioned!
I moved up to Westchester years before I moved to the south and I have to say that, not only can you not get any decent pizza in the south, but you can't even get really good pizza in NY outside of the 63rd Precinct!
