Duke,
In western NC try Tony's Pizza. Good "New York" style pizza!

Not one decent pizza in the south....?
Say it ain't so, but it is......sorry......
As soon as you hit Maryland and on down - you can't get a good NY pizza. So pick up one in Philly - it will be your last chance if you are driving. I've been to that place in Hilton Head. What happens down there is business sags, and then our transplanted New Yorkers go, "Oh what the h*ll?" and start making the "Dough Roller" pizza more southerners love, which up north is like a frozen pizza. Then business goes up again. Sad but true. Ask around a little, maybe not everywhere, but its a common tale. I got suckered in by the ads in Ocean City, Md - I couldn't believe how bad AND HOW CROWDED Dough Roller's was. Unbelievable, I told the kid this would be a below average frozen pizza in NY, CT, or NJ. Think I'll stick to the Blue Crabs.....
Chicago pizza might be good, but I'd compare it to lasagna or baked ziti before I'd compare it to a NYC or New Haven pizza - it's just not comparable.
I'd say, go up to some of these transplanted pizza chef NY-ers and say, "Can anybody make me a real NY pie?" Most of these guys like the challenge, and more often than once, I've had them make it like home, but there is no substitute for NYC water. Around the country, people think this water must come from Brooklyn or Harlem, or Mt.Vernon, but trust me - this water is piped 60 miles from beautiful reservoirs in lower upstate, and even one in CT. It's the best water in the country, hence you're getting a better pie.

Mellow Mushroom in Asheville makes their dough with spring water - I think it's the most delicious pizza I've ever eaten. So please, those of you who claim you can't get a good pizza south of wherever - it's only YOUR opinion! mmmmmm pizza - want some right now! lol

I am from Buffalo and really miss good pizza. However, just keep looking for a small mom and pop's kind of place. A lot of NYers move down here and open up places. Stay strong! You will find some good Italian food and pizza. It may not be like it is from home, but at least you will really appreciate that treat when you visit your home town.

lol, tooo funny but true, when i moved down to nc i couldn't find a good pizza in my area. SO i opened my own!!!! Since i was italian and had been brought up with real italian cooking i thought why not. well the business was great and the people from ny nj etc,,, loved it, but some of the locals at first thought i burned it lol, not use to the well done crust!!! you know how its suppose to crack when you bend it and the olive oil drips out mmmm. well i sold it since then and am having a hard time finding another good one which uses top shelf ingredients not cheese that balls up in your mouth. HEY IF YOU COMING DOWN THIS WAY MAKE SURE TO STOCK UP ON bagels !!!! lol

We will be moving about 1/2 in the middle between these two and
you taste tasters out there, what's your recommendation?....

One of my best friends is a WNC native and his wife is from Jersey. He says she always complains how she can't find good pizza in the south. He tells her to go back to Jersey. LOL!

Thanks for the post about Asheville area. We will give them a try. The food, so far, is different from California, but we love it! The only danger is that my husband and I might be about 300 pounders within a couple of years!!!
Thanks again,
~Duke
