J & S in Apex on rte 55. I'm also from NY and I'm italian and I can assure it doesn't get any better than that. It might be the best pizza I've ever had. ever.

If all else fails, yes, make your own pizza.
NC is no culinary black hole by any means (I found lots of good food in the Raleigh area, to my surprise actually, and the restaurant sanitation standards are pretty strict there so you tend to find clean places to eat out) but there's some things they do not do well.....yet.
Not really a pizza place, but there is a decent (as in OK food, good price) Italian restaurant on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh called Ragazzi's and they do have pizza that is not bad at all. But don't bother with the cannolis - every one I came across in NC seemed as if it had cottage cheese in it rather than ricotta. Um, yeah. There might be a good cannoli in NC, but it's like the Holy Grail. Sooner or later the NY/NJ transplants have got to fix that. They may have already.
You do have Pizza Inns and Cici's. That's not really great pizza, but it's edible and it's cheap.

I was thinking something like that the other day. If the New Yorkers coming down here don't like the pizza, do something about it. lol
I personally love Briixx Pizza on Westover Terrace in Greensboro and Long Island Pizza in Surf City. The latter being the best pizza I've ever put in my mouth in all my 34 years.

Who defines what is "good" pizza?
Have any of you people ever even been to italy?
Simple thin crust, tomatoes, not a lot of cheese and basil. That's it.
All the "good" pizza you all are looking for is totally Americanized anyway. In the Charlotte area Bullzeye Pizza, Tony's, Mellow Mushroom, Brooklyn Pizza, etc are all good.
The most HILARIOUS thing about people complaining about NC pizza is that the vast majority of pizza places in the Charlotte area are owned and operated by NY/New England italians. Same with people complaining about the lack of "good" Mexican food....um, the Mexican restaurants are all run by actual Mexicans.
People just like to complain, I am convinced.

Pizza
There is no such thing as good pizza in the Greenville area of NC. It is because of the water. You cannot get good, authentic Italian bread here either. When we go back to Jersey in 2 weeks, I order 40 loaves of Calandra Semolina, lots of frozen pizza dough and bring them back home with me until we go back for the holidays and replenish. So, if you are moving down here solely for the food check out the places carefully where you want to live. Nina's Italian restaurant in Raleigh is outstanding.

Considering pizza was "born" on this side of the pond, does it matter?

Actually it was not, pumpkin.
It's not an American creation, although it has been Americanized.
None of that changes the fact that a bunch of Northerners come on the NC boards and moan about "I can't find good pizza" when in actuality, the vast majority of the pizza places in Charlotte (for example) are owned by other Northerners.
I am from out West, but you don't see me moaning about not being able to find a good fish taco, do you? Maybe next I'll move to Montana an write all over their board about how it's so hard to find decent shrimp and grits.

Thank you Thank you Thank You
I can see it might be a concern if someone was saying I cannot find a place that has good chicken and dumplings, country fried steak, corn bread, hush puppies, sweet potatoe casserole, BBQ chicken or creamy Pimento Cheese and my all time favorite Buttermilk Pie
The food here is what makes part of our culture. I welcome variety of restaurants but I know the above list would be hard for me to find in San Jose or Syracuse nor do I expect there to be restaurants serving those items.
I have issue with I cannot find good western style BBQ around here but I live with or I drive a hour north to Lexingto to fix that craving.
