My folks retired in Fayetteville nearly 20 years ago - despite what you may read on this board, it is actually a really nice town. While it is a military town, the "locals" are very involved in the community. Downtown has undergone a terrific revitalization, with great galleries, coffee shops, and boutiques. The Cape Fear Regional Theater brings in great guest talent, and they have an amphitheater on the river that is a beautiful place to take in a show. They also host a regional wine festival and beer tasting.
There are also unsightly strip malls and bad traffic in certain areas, and my husband definitely prefers our location in Raleigh - so I'm still realistic here, but at least give it a look.
