Why are there so many blogs for North Carolina?
Why are there so many blogs for North Carolina? Is NC special, or is there more to be talked about down there? Is the blogging culture just very widespread or is it ingrained in North Carolina culture. Honestly, when I think of the Carolinas, I don't think of a high tech society, I think of golf courses, beaches, Confederate flags and rednecks.

A "high tech society" is not the be all and end all of great living for pete's sake!
Beaches, golf courses, not to mention beautiful mountains and glorious vistas, affordable cost of living, top colleges and universities, top medical care, southern traditions and manners - these all make for a very nice quality of life for many in NC. If people blog about it a lot it's because they love where they live and feel happy to be at home.
Oh, and there is plenty of "high tech" society to be found in the triangle if that is your thing. Read a recent statistic that there are actually more phD's there than any other place on the whole eastern seaboard working in Research Triangle Park.
As for Confederate flags and rednecks - neither of which you seem to understand - yes, they are here. For those of us who understand what they are really all about and stand for we are proud to have them here.

I guess you never heard of RTP? You know the home of research and development for comapnies like IBM, Cisco Systems, Sony Ericsson, GlaxoSmithKline ect....
The Research Triangle Park
The Triangle Area (Raleigh / Durham/ Chapel Hill) has a highly educated population. Charlotte ain't too shaby either!

Well, to be respectfully blunt, then your assumptions about North Carolina are far from reality..... except that we do indeed have very nice beaches, golf courses, and a multitude of other outdoor recreation within easy reach
I'm not going to write a treatise on the subject, as there is a wealth of information to be found in these forums and elsewhere, but in contrast to your supposition North Carolina is indeed a technology and commerce center. The Raleigh/Durham area hosts one of the largest concentrations of high technology with RTP and surrounding areas, world class medical centers, and Charlotte is one of the nation's largest banking centers.
And of course, North Carolina(and really much of the SE coastal area) is a very beautiful and comfortable place to live both from a environmental and social perspective. Plus one can also experience quite a bit of diversity.
One could argue the individual merits of other locales throughout the nation, but as a sum, North Carolina has a lot to offer and is why it is such a popular destination.
Even with the current real estate downturn, many areas in NC have maintained value and been relatively insulated simply because of these and other factors that continue to bring people to the state.
Do some research, and I think you'll find that many communities in NC consistently rank in the top 10 under a variety of criteria.
Cheers,
Al

That is the oddest thing. I have a family member from Joliet, Ill and her opinion of NC sounds exactly like yours! I found that soooooo odd b/c not like Joliet is that great of a place to live (or for that matter - have been raised). Maybe the definition of "redneck" is different up there than here - cause to me - the stereotype means "uneducated, low class or maybe even "trash" - and I have seen more big bellied, trash talking, beer swilling uneducated types in parts of Illinois than anywhere around here. In fact, I have meant to ask the relative about her definition of "redneck" . . .
So I am not sure what you all are taught about NC . . . the people I know from CHI love NC (as I love CHI!!!)
You should come spend some time in our state! It is beautiful here. The only Confederate flags I have seen since I moved back to the South were actually from other states (on cars). Have not seen anyone anywhere actually FLYING a Confederate flag.
As far as technology - I am sitting here posting this via WiFi . . . and my son just IM'd me from Boone, wh/ is a small little town in our mountains . . . and he sent it via his iPhone . . . so . . . not sure what the heck you mean by your statement. A lot more rural open spaces in Illinois - and I do know - as I lived in the midwest and have driven up and down and across Illinois dozens of times.

Funny, because Illinois makes me think of housing projects, governmental corruption and the mafia. What's underneath the surface is not always what is portrayed by the stereotypes. I think there are so many Carolina blogs because we generally care about one another, and want to be in the know.

That was a great explanation, Hoagie. And you are right - all stereotypes! I LOVE CHICAGO!!! And I cannot imagine anyone from CHI not loving NC . . .

Hey Mike, ride by and blow your horn for me, you know, the one that plays "Dixie", I'll jump in the cab to take that spin with you and the dogs.
One question, do I need to spray myself down for fleas first or did you dip the dogs recently??

Worryin' about fleas is for city folk. Spend any quality time in a county lock-up, and you'll see how much you don't worry about fleas.
