It's been increasing for a while now. While people are moving out; people are also moving in. Don't know where they're coming from but they're coming. There are houses being build right to left it's insane.

I'm not sure if you are looking for more of a metro area, or a bigger change to mid-sized city living with a small town feel... but if the latter is an option, you might consider Sanford.

Sanford is almost equidistant from Greensboro, Fayetteville, and the Triangle, and really is a well kept secret that I believe is just on the cusp of breaking out. We've got a lot of transplants from all over the nation, and from all sizes of cities. We came from the San Francisco area and love it here.

Here's a helpful map that shows Sanford's relation to other areas:

Some other info:

Downtown Sanford, INC. | Sanford, North Carolina
City of Sanford, North Carolina - The Official Government Website
Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce
Lee County 2nd Century Project

Good luck!

Ain't that the truth!! As a fellow Long Islander, I'm also ready to call it quits after taking a trip to the Carolinas this summer...don't know where to start, but am gathering as much info as I can.
I have the same concerns - job, schools, community. These forums can be quite helpful so I'm keeping my eyes open..

North Carolina QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

PS don't hold your breath about low taxes in NC.

As for booming housing/population, that's happening in NC too (in fact most areas of the country.....).

Hi, I just moved from Bay Shore, LI. What I miss from LI is all of the stores and ammenities/resources available. The difference here is the towns are a lot larger than in LI.

I currently live in Statesville. If your looking to invest in property and/or business this is the place to be since Statesville is growing and taxes are real cheap. But I have to drive 15-20 min. to Mooresville to shop at Old Navy, Target, Best Buy, Ulta, Bed Bath and Beyond, Panera Bread, etc. Mooresville is like Long Island. But if you want a little quiet and cheap taxes you can live in Troutman which is like living in Stony Brook, Montauk Point. (It's like living out east.)

Depending what you do? If you live in Mooresville it will take you 30 min. to go into work in Charlotte. Huntersville is also nice. They have Pier One Imports and all the other stores I mentioned above. But that's in Mcklenburg County.

I would not suggest moving into Mcklenburg County...HIGHER TAXES!!!

The schools are ok. I believe in NY the schools are more into the arts and music. I have a 9yr. and 5 yr. old that are attending and so far so good. We are still adjusting to the accents here but believe it or not. I have seen more NYers here and I hope we do take over the Carolinas...wink!

In Long Island most homes have atleast 2 families living in it. People rent their basements out or a portion of their home just to afford their mortgage.

My sister is a single parent with 3 kids. She makes $15 per hour here in Statesville. (Primarily being bilingual in Statesville, NC is a PLUS) She just bought her first home. Newly built! She got to pick out her windows, carpet, cabinets, etc. for $125,000 for a 4 bedroom house, 2 full baths, 1 Powder Bathroom, Laundry room, 2 car garage. Now tell me why we moved! She's only 26.

I just moved her 5 months ago and trust me the houses here are beautiful. Now finding a job here is a little bit difficult in Statesville. We are building lots of new facilities. They just opened up a 24 hour Peak Fitness, We have a Super Walmart, Kmart, IHOP, Applebees, Taco Bell. and there's other small stores but like my previous post I travel to Mooresville which is about 15-20 min. drive to Target etc.

So all those people who are buying homes are most likely people who live in the city and are ready to have a family. For instance we sold our home to an accountant who was looking to move his family to a bigger place. We have a friend who also works in the city and just bought a home in Shirly when his wife got pregnant.

And for those who have homes in Long Island we just want the same quality of living but cheaper. North Carolina is the place to go.

Why does half of LI want a free ride in North Carolina? Saying things like "I hope we take over here." And then the transplants wonder why so many natives are sick and tired of people like them. These boards are full of people from up north who don't want to pay any taxes, but expect top quality schools and no over-crowding etc. What do you think pays for the schools and getting good teachers? What do you think pays for the resources you come down here to exploit? The land rush of fed up Northerners to NC is putting such an unnatural burden on the local resources and services that it is compromising everyone's quality-of-life, especially the people who grew up in NC.

? People from more crowded places move to less crowded places. This is not exactly some new radical line of thought - how do you think the "suburbs" were created in the first place? Besides it's y'all's fault for having such a nice place to move to and had the privilege to grow up in, so spare us the rant.

PS as for "What do you think pays for the schools and getting good teachers? What do you think pays for the resources..." Actually it's "who" and the answer is "taxpayers" - and people who move here are part of that group.
