Emigrating from UK to Pinehurst, North Carolina
Hi
My family and I are begininng our research into moving to Pinehurst NC.
We would welcome any information locals have with regards to schoolling, junior golf and families in the area.
We have 3 children aged 13,8,4, obv our teenage daughter is not keen on the move, understandibly worried about making new friends, she is very bright straight A's with a great talent for the Arts, drama etc. She is keen to go to University for a medical degree.
Our sons are golf mad and very talented, the opportunitys here in the UK are very poor hence a large incentive to move. We operate a junior golf tour across the UK and would be keen to develop a similar tour in NC.
Its a minefield of research to undertake, but we will be visiting in Sept to look around.
Is there a welcome enviroment for Brits, esp Children ?
How low is local crime, are the hospitals and schools of a high standard.
Is the humidity really bad ?
Your info greatly appreciated.

I am an NC native and I may be wrong but I don't think there is much more to Pinehurst than golf. Not sure about schools, etc. You might want to try a larger city (i.e. Raleigh or Greensboro)...still within driving distance to Pinehurst. Hopefully, someone from the Pinehurst area can answer some of your questions. Good luck with your move!

For golf, you've chosen the right place. 42 golf courses in Moore County and more being planned. As for being welcomed as a Brit? This area is open to all. If you look at the population growth you can see that the population growth is growing. People from all over the world are moving here.
Schools are good. (I have 2 granddaughters in the school system. 1 16 yr old and one 12 yr old). They move here (from NY) about 4 yrs ago. The oldest (12 at the time) did NOT want to come. Now? They love it! Can you promise her horse-riding? Lots of stables around. And she gets her drivers permit at 15. License at 16.
Crime is low, hospital is great, and yes, the humidity is bad. But that is one small drawback that you learn to work around. It is NOT humid every day. And you adapt quickly.
Although Pinehurst has a reputation for being a "retirement community", that is not exactly true anymore. Lots of young familes are moving into the area. Pinehurst now boasts soccer fields, baseball fields, and an in-line roller skating rink.
Packing for September? Sweaters should be packed, in place of coats. Temperature will still be very warm.
If I can be of further help, please let me know.

I'm a Brit living in Raleigh - The humidity - well if you went into a sauna fully clothed and started doing press ups for an hour then thats how you would feel after working outside for 10 minutes at this time of year. It's terrible but the spring and fall make up for it

Hi Everyone, here is another Brit looking at places and areas to stay. I have eramarked Pinehurst Elementary and West Pine Middle for the kids and was wondering the best palces to rent for at least a year.
The area needs to be within the schools earmarked and possibly not too isolated. Any advise will be very welcome.
Thanks
Derek

Hi,
Pinehurst is also very close to two other towns, Southern Pines and Aberdeen. We live in Southern Pines about 5 to 10 min away from either.
I find Pinehurst to be a split into two areas, the village and the house tracts nearby. There is quite a bit of variety of costs from $150,000 to over $1,000,000 USD for housing. The village is quite charming and a tourist destination.
Southern Pines is also a small town with a delightful main street and lots of shops and places to eat. It is surrounded by golf and horses. We like that we can walk to most of the activities and festivals that seem to be happening every month. It is a town full of families and a great diversity of people from all parts of the USA.
Aberdeen is where we do most of our shopping and also has a small village type downtown.
When you put the three places together, it seems like we have it all.
You might find the local paper interesting to look at online and look at the Sandhills Guide tab to see what happens on a yearly basis. www.thepilot.com

I live in Pinehurst and have a 13 year old daughter as well If you have specific questions I would be happy to help.
As far as the schools, Public schools are supposed to be pretty good - my daughter attended a private school but for the past 3 years but is switching to West Pine Middle.
Crime is low - I used to live in NYC - it is completely different environment- takes some time getting used to if you are a city person
Humid - yes...but not unbearable!
There are many houses for rent and sale in my neighborhood which is a few miles from downtown Pinehurst and the Pinehurst Resort & Spa.

I find it a little funny you are moving to NC from the UK because I am hoping to do the exact opposite.
I am 20 years of age, which is older than your children are, but can still assure you that they should have no trouble making friends. Though I do warn you that they may be overwhelmed by kids trying to strike up conversations- children around here seem to be captivated by the British accent.
