Cool North Carolina Has Drama!

North Carolina has some wonderful outdoor drama across the state
Some of them are the oldest outdoor dramas across the United States.
Im curious which ones have you attended or plan to attend?

PATHWAY TO FREEDOM
The only outdoor drama that deals with African American history and the underground railroad.

Horn in the West Outdoor Drama in Boone, Western North Carolina
Horn in the West drama is performed in Boone North Carolina at one of the most beautiful outdoor theatres. Horn in the West is great entertainment to share with family. Highlighting the story of the nation’s first settlers to the Blue Ridge Mountains,

The Lost of Colony - Show Introduction
is a historical play by Paul Green about Roanoke, the first English colony in North America. Based upon Sir Walter Raleigh's failed attempts at establishing a permanent settlement in the 1580s in part of what was then the Colony of Virginia, the play has been performed since 1937 in an outdoor theater nearby the site on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks region near present-day Manteo, North Carolina. The Lost Colony was the first, and as of 2007 was the longest running, historical outdoor drama in the United States

Unto These Hills - a Dramatic Retelling of Cherokee History | Performance in Cherokee, NC
The new play traces the Cherokee people through the aeons, through the zenith of their power, through the heartbreak of the Trail of Tears, finally ending, appropriately, in the present day, where the Cherokee people, much like their newly rescripted drama, continue to rewrite their place in the world. A place based on traditional Cherokee values and modern sensibilities.

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD
This drama tells the story of the Waldenses, a people from the area known as the Cottian Alps in Northern Italy near the French border, and the founders of the Town of Valdese

Miracle On The Mountain
Mary Sloop, one of the state’s first female medical doctors, founded the Crossnore School in 1913. As play-goers will see, she fought long-standing traditions of moonshining, truancy and teen marriage. Her legacy continues today, nearly 100 years later, as the Crossnore School, a private, nonprofit children’s home and school, serves more than 250 abused abandoned and neglected children each year from across the state.
“This is an important story, not just for our children but for the region,” Crain said. “The Sloops were pioneers of their day and made tremendous, lasting contributions to the area and in the lives of the children they served.”

MOONSHINE AND THUNDER - THE JUNIOR JOHNSON STORY
tells the story of the early years of running ‘shine and racing in the mountains of NC and its evolution to NASCAR. It is a story steeped in Scotch-Irish culture and tradition and doused with moonshine! Set in Wilkes County- once known as the moonshine capitol of the world—the play focuses primarily on one man and his family – a man that went on to be a NASCAR legend – Junior Johnson. The play focuses on Junior Johnson through his early years as a moonshiner to his early years in NASCAR – documenting the beginnings of a living legend. It will be a historical fiction and chronicles the early life and times of Junior Johnson from running shine to his first big win on a “super speedway” at the Daytona 500 in 1960. “Moonshine and Thunder – The Junior Johnson Story” is a celebration of the people living in the foothills of North Carolina. It will be told with respect for the people who shaped this area and put Wilkes County on the map

Thanks for those choosing the outdoor dramas they plan or have seen.

I just saw Unto These Hills this past weekend and it is a great moving show.
The story is Bittersweet.

Have seen The Lost Colony six times over the years and would enjoy going again. Have also seen Horn in the West more than a dozen times and Unto These Hills, twice; From This Day Forward, once. I think these are great excursions for kids, too, as the plays are engaging and can help teach a bit of history, as well.
