Default why are there so many boro's in NC?

this state if filled with them. I will start a list. feel free to add.

it probably has a lot to do with the people who named the town and where they came from.

every state doesn't have them like NC does. I bet NC has over 50.

Can't believe I am responding to this, but here goes...

You will find the ending "boro", which is short for borough, in states which made up the original 13 colonies. This is because back in England since the middle ages the word "borough" was used to describe townships or areas granted some form or self government. This English concept and word were brought over here as the English formed settlements in "New" England. We Americans adopted this traditional word and used it in places like Pittsburgh - also another way of saying "boro".

Massachusetts has them also, I was raised in one of them. I don't know about North Carolina, but in New England they are defintely named after communities in the UK.
