I believe as long as the bill of sale is signed over to you, you can drive it back to NY to get a plate without a problem. If you were to be stopped you would only have to show the bill of sale and give your New York address to explain things. Then when you get home you could mail the NC plate back to the previous owner for them to turn in. That's what we did previously. Oh, and call you insurance agent to be sure they cover the car the day you buy it, and fax you something showing that, so you can produce it if need to to a cop.
If there is a temp tag of some kind I am not aware of it.
