Default Moving to NC

Hello,

We are moving to NC in a few months. My husband has a job just over the border in SC, so we are looking at the Hendersonville/Arden area so we are still in the Asheville area but also close to his work.

We are planning to rent before buying so we can be sure of the area, etc. We are looking at a house in Lake Julian Trails. Does anyone know anything about this development? Also the house looks at the power plant. Anyone know anything about this? My husband is EXTREMELY sceptacle of having a home near a power plant.

Also if anyone can recommend any preschools in the area. I have a 4 yo and a 10 month old.
thanks.

Number one, you don't want to live in Asheville if your hubby is going to work in SC. It's close to an hour from Asheville to the state line. Lake Julian Trails (and I may get bopped over the head for this one) is a cheesy condo development marketed because of it's location in Asheville.

You want to live in SC, not NC. Do you realize that hubby will have to traverse up and down the mountain range every day, twice a day, just to get to work?

I'm serious ! you can get twice the home in SC for the same price! and a single family home at that. Condos are even less.

what part of SC is your husbands job in? You may want to consider south Charlotte or SC to make his commute more managable. Send me a PM and I can send you info about this area - including rentals.

Apple Annie is right - look to live in SC - much more convenient and affordable. Personally, I love the little town of Landrum - give it a look-see

Smile Arden/Hendersonville Area

I agree with Apple Annie. Hendersonville is my hometown and I can tell you that trek across Saluda Mtn is not fun. Sometimes the fog can be tough and in winter weather (which you will see often) can make it hazardous. Have you considered Polk County? Tryon, Saluda, Columbus. Or, as she suggested upstate SC.

Driving from Spartanburg to Hendersonville was a real thrill before they built I-26, even during perfect weather. Huge dropoffs, rockslides and no guardrails.

Default NC vs SC

I agree that Hendersonville or Asheville would likely be too difficult of a traverse, however without knowing specifically what are your husband would be working in makes the suggestions limited. I personall live a little east of I26 off of US74. I find Polk and Rutherford county, NC both to be beautiful and affordable. Also, Tryon or Columbus right off of I26 near the NC/SC border a really beautiful area.
Both states have State income tax. Gas is a little cheaper in SC though, however I find the scenery much better in NC.
I think if you can get close enough to the border either way, you will likely be happy.
Best of luck to you.

Cindy,

I thought I'd responded before...but don't see it.

We live in Forest City, NC which is very close to the SC line. It's the best of both worlds. Isothermal Belt. Really great town!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

tk

Default Fly ash pollution from the power plant on Lake Julian

I too am skeptical about living near that coal fired power plant on Lake Julian.

Once I read the news story (link below) about the pollution problems they are currently having at Lake Julian Trails, I decided it would be best to avoid that area altogether.
