Moving from south florida to NC? Raleigh or Charlotte?
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone here has made this move? Me and my gf want to move out of South Florida, and North Carolina is a place that has come up as an alternative...along with Denver CO
I think the main reason we want to move out is, believe it or not, the weather. It is just too hot here, I'm honestly tired of the year round summer. While I see this a reason why most people move here, for me it's a bit too much. If it was something that lasted a few months I probably would not mind much but dealing with 85-95+ degree temperature for 99% of the year is a bit too much once you factor in the extreme humidity.
We will most likely be visiting NC in October. Initially we thought about going to Charlotte to look around but, fairly or unfairly, seems a lot of the posts dealing with Charlotte are about crime. Now I know I live in South Florida and it isn't the safest place around, but looking at some numbers, the crime rates in Charlotte are much higher than S FL.
Seems the Raleigh area is a bit better in that regards, but unfortunately data is all we have to go on. We're only going for about 4 days or so and we have to pick between flying to Raleigh or Charlotte.
Which of the two areas would you recommend?
Thanks!
Louis

Charlotte or Raleigh to visit
I think Raleigh is a better choice. I currently live in Charlotte and feel that the crime is an issue. Of course, you may be able to move to a better neighborhood and avoid most of that.
The Triangle has universities, recreation, jobs, and most of all space. You get the feel here in Charlotte that bigger is better and we want all the pro sports teams in downtown Charlotte. Raleigh-Durham is big enough, but seems a little friendlier. How about some other viewpoints?

Thanks, that seems to be what I'm hearing as well that Raleigh might be a better choice to visit first.

I moved from South Florida to Fayetteville NC 10 years ago for a job. I wanted to get out of South Florida for similar reasons. I have since moved to the Raleigh area and love it. I miss the beaches but that is about it.

Raleigh and Charlotte are both great places to live. If it were me it would come down to which area you find the best JOB in. Each place has its strengths and weaknesses with certain job fields so depending on what you and your wife do, you may find one area has better opportunities for you than the other. IF they both have great job opportunities for you, I would move to the place that offers you the best job.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice, I'll try to get to both of them but seems I might be leaning towards Raleigh a bit. We will be booking our trip in the coming days, thanks!

We moved to SC Lake Greenwood from Punta Gorda for same reason. Keep us advised on your Raleigh visit.

It's so funny; I posted the exact same question when we first started looking...thought I'd lean toward Raleigh, too, but after the visit Charlotte was the clear choice for us. It honestly depends on a lot of factors unique to each person's situation, but it comes down to the feel you get from both places. Charlotte felt more right.
As someone who grew up and spent 22 years in Denver, I'd highly advise you to look around and get advice on their forum, as well. My family relocated to the South, otherwise I definitely would have gone back to Colorado at some point...it's a wonderful, wonderful place to live. It's apples and oranges comparing it to NC (and I know you said you hate hot weather, so the weather is one of the best things about the CO option -- 360 days a year of sunshine, no humidity...but a LOT of snow if you can deal with that )...but Denver is definitely worth a trip, as well.
Good luck!

What do you do for recreation? Raleigh is two hours from the Ocean and Charlotte is two hours from the mountains.
Raleigh is too hot for me. Charlotte can be hot and sticky too but you can relief from it in the mountains.
If, like me, you motorcycle Charlotte is the best choice.
Traffic in both cities is horrible because of the rapid growth.
