Default More info about Hickory

HI, I'd love any other info anyone has about Hickory. I am researching many of the mtn areas of NC and am getting a little overwhelmed. I have 2 kids and am hoping to stay beneath 75k. My biggest concern is moving to a place where my 14 y.o. son will be able to fit in...are there enough transplants in Hickory that he'll be able to find others who want to make new friends? I'm ready to move, but my parents keep telling me that "he won't fit in b/c it's a rural community where everyone knows each other's grandparents...." I think the people in NC seemed a lot nicer than here in FL, but hey, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say!

I teach online, and just got hired by a 3rd online company, so I am almost ready to quit my day job and move to NC, but am trying to decide & buy a house before I move since I will be technically "self employed" once I quit and it may be harder to qualify. Does anyone also have experience with the average cost of daycare up there?

Thanks!

Rachael

Rachael:

If you want to stay under the 75k line look into double wide manufactured homes, or even single wides as you can do a land/home package with the home sellers. If you go with a large company like Clayton Homes you will stand a better chance of getting a mortgage as many lenders no longer like to loan out on manufactured homes. I will provide you with some links if this interests you.

My husband and I are hoping to relocate in a year or so from NJ. We visited Hickory in November and were very impressed. We have two children, older 17 and 20, and this is a BIG step for us. We have talked about it for years and I think we are actually ready. I looked up statistical info on this site and found alot of crime and sex offenders in the area. That has me frightened. Also reading these posts makes it seem very difficult to find work in the area. My husband runs an auto body shop here and will be looking for work in that field or as an adjuster for auto insurance. We looked at the Deerfield development which seemed very new. It was close to a mall and alot of car dealerships. The development had nice homes and land with each house which is exactly what we are looking for. Some of the homes were pricey though! We stayed in Morganton and spent most of our days looking in that area. Did not find anything that we were interested in. Homes were close together and did not have land. Job market seemed little to none. Also, my daughter is looking for a christian college somewhere in the NC/Tennessee area. Any help on our search for relocating in Hickory or nearby vicinity and christian colleges would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you for the quick reply. I will check it out. We are planning to visit NC & Tennessee this summer with our camper. I have been trying to find a central campground somewhere between Hickory and Johnson City, Tennessee so we can get a better look at the area for relocation and my daughter wants to look at Milligan College in Tennessee. Maybe I can put Lenoir/Rhyne on the list as well.

I cannot figure out how to put up a new post on this site. Can you help? Thanks again!

check out Lake Hickory RV Resort,N.C. or google Lake Hickory Gampground. There is also one toward Lake James but for the life of me I can't remember the name. That would be on Hwy 40 going toward Ashville, N.C. I think it just above Morganton.
I live in Catawba County,Conover Newton,Hickory are all in this County.
I live out in the country between St Stevens High School and Bunker Hill High on the out skirts of Conover. I'm 20 mins. from Hickory Down town, Newton/Conover, sort of in the middle of both.
My husband is a brick mason and there is a lot of home construction going on all over the county.

Thank you! I will look at Lake Hickory RV Resort and Lake James. We live in the country right now and are hoping to find something similar. We have the camper and a car trailer that we keep parked at the house and are used to having land so I am looking for an area where we can have at least 2, preferably 3 acres. Thanks again!

Hello everyone!

I just got a job at Brian Center, Hickory, NC. I was wondering if there is anybody here who could recommend reasonably-priced, safe and clean apartment complexes that I could rent that is nearby this area.

Thank you very much. Would very much appreciate any inputs re: this :-)

Is the location of this particular Brian Center near Old Lenoir Highway? If it is, there are apts. right there - I think called Creekside, maybe??? I do not live in Hickory (I am in Charlotte) but have family in Hickory, so forgive me if I have the location of Brian Center wrong. However since no one else was posting, thought I would try to share what I know (or think I know! LOL!)

Dear Anifani821,

Thank you for replying to my post :-)

I will try to look at Creekside apartments as you suggested.
