Yet another NJ native looking to relocate to NC. I have been doing some research on Zebulon and Selma, housing prices are great, and Wake county schools look ok, although I'm not sure about the year round school????
Haven't found and info on Selma. Any information would be great.
You may want to check out the Triad area (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point) as well. I transferred with my job and chose the Triad over the Triangle. Raleigh area is getting pretty crowded with transplants. Greensboro is not bad at all (yet). I am originally from Hunterdon County, NJ.
I lived in Selma for about 7 years, well between Micro and Selma and believe me Micro lives up to its name. As for Selma, the best part about it was the pottery outlet and J & R's, another outlet store. I didn't particulary like living in Selma. My husband is from another Johnston County town, Kenly. And I moved there in 1985 and stayed there until 1992 when we moved back to Greene County where I am from. I don't know, I just had a hard time adjusting to being there. But Chris sure didn't have an problem adjusting to Snow Hill, where we are now. But I guess it is all in what you are looking for. I don't mean to sound ugly, but I don't think if it hadn't been for the fact that my husband was from the area that I would have moved there on purpose.
What was it about Selma that you didn't like? We are looking for something, small town, with lots of privacy and room to roam. We don't want the cookie cutter developments that I have seen in Charlotte.

In fact, all areas of NC are getting more crowded....it seems everyone wants to move here!! Schools are overcrowded, roads are becoming even more crowded, taxes are rising to help with growth, and our neighbor (from NJ) who moved here four years ago is complaining about all the people moving here! But then he complains about NC not being like NJ, so I'm not sure just what he wants?? At any rate, we were "in the country" but have been anexed by the city and will have to pay city/county tax, will HAVE to tap on to city water and sewage and all this was decided by a town council that we couldn't vote to elect because we were not in city limits at that time!! Three of the members of the council are in real estate...either builders of realtors. Our county taxes almost doubled three years ago and now we'll have city tax to add to that. We don't have children in the school system, but parents are up in arms about the shuffle of their kids from one school to another. Things are crowded and life is definitely changing here....and not for the better.

I understand completely what you mean Whitley, I currently live in Ocean County NJ, and the same thing has happened here, with people moving down from NY.
But I promise that I won't complain about NC not being like NJ!!

Well, in my opinion Selma just doesn't do it for me for a small town. When I was there, the DWI rate was high. The drug crime was high and I just hated the place in general. It wasn't home to me. Then there was Hwy 95 to deal with. And we lived right off of it. It wasn't a cluster of little houses off the main drag. After you got off 95 there was still Hwy 301 to deal with. I live in a completely rural area. And for a small town, this just had too many things that I didn't like. We almost bought a house there once and I am so glad we didn't. The price was great on the house that we looked out but I think back now and I am so happy we didn't buy it.
Thank you for the info...We have 2 children ages 14 and 7. I really want someplace that is safe, and although i'm sure there are drugs and DWI everywhere, I would really like to start out someplace with as little an influence as possible. What are your thoughts on Zebulon? Any info is appreciated.
I'm sorry. I know nothing about Zebulon except I have a first cousin that moved from here over there. And she was a live long resident of Greene County when she moved like I was when I moved to Selma. That was about 10 years ago and she was a lot older than I was when she moved and she hasn't come back to Greene County yet. So I figure it must be worth investigating. But again that is about all I can tell you. Most people coming from where I am either get here by two means. They are either born here like I was or they marry someone that was born here like my husband is. We have very few people that moved here because they were thrilled with the place. It is all rural although we have four adjoining counties that make up for what we lack. You just have to drive between 17-22 miles to get there. There is an art to living in Greene County. You either love it and wouldn't leave for the world or the minute you turn 18 and have been here all your life you are looking a way out. I have one child that you couldn't pry out of here period. Then I have one that bolted the second that she could and the other son is living in Mt. Olive in Wayne County and he seems to strandle the fence some. He is happy where he is but he would probably come home if he had something here to appeal to him. As for my daughter, she was sitting on go the second she graduated high school. She graduated from Peace College in 2000 and has been in Raleigh ever since.
