Great thread! I've been a Michigander all of my life and I use many of these phrases and slang. Especially "the back 40", it's my fav! And then and than, yeah I'm guilty of that too!

You're so funny!

I like the term "Bubba". It can be used in a friendly manner like when my neighbor yells "howdy Bubba". It can be used in an insulting manner like when I warn people about "Bubba crossing the center line in blind curves with his big pickmup truck".

I moved her from NJ a year ago also and with 3 teenagers in school they hear it all.....the word they hear most often is "won't" in the place of "wasn't"
" I won't in school yesterday" & "Girl Bye" meaning= for real, awe get outta here. just to mention a few.

I love it here

My father who is in his upper 70's has used an expression all his life that I have never heard anyone else use. If someone does some work for you and doesn't get it right, he says that they need to "lick their calf over". How bizarre. I can kinda see the meaning, kinda. Like a cow licks their calf to clean up their mess..?.
Also get your a$$ off of your shoulders. Meaning stop being cranky or an ill pot.

From SE NC. This one really tripped me up.

Are you going to the "Settin Up"?

Refering to what I had always known as a wake.

I grew up in the mountains, and one of my favorites is "3 fits and a qware spell". For example, "If she knew what he'd done, she'd have 3 fits and a qware spell" ; meaning to get REALLY upset over something.
