Please does anyone know how the public schools in north carolina compare with other states. Thank you

Depends on what you're looking at on how they rank.... And schools vary throughout the state.

Visit Greatschools.com. It is hard to compare between states but this should give you an accurate assessment of schools and then you need to personalize your questions to your requirements. I have been told recently by one school district (Iredell) that they are planning on redistricing because of unbalanced population growth. Not all those schools in the county operate by the same standards. This could shake some who have relocated to a particular area because of the quality of that one school. You need to dig deep but you don't know what future changes will occur due to the continued growth of the areas. Good luck.
